Description
Keiichirō Senda is a classmate and teammate of the protagonist, Kou Kitamura, attending the same schools from middle school through high school. He is a right-handed player who initially serves as the ace pitcher for the Seishu Academy Middle School baseball team, a position that leads him to be quite popular among his peers.
In terms of personality, Senda is introduced as a cocky and boastful individual with an inflated sense of his own abilities. He frequently brags about being the top pitcher and cleanup hitter, a reputation he feels entitles him to special treatment. This self-assurance extends to his social life, as he is confident in his appeal to girls and openly pursues Aoba Tsukishima, frequently asking her out. He has a tendency to fawn over older or more established players, a behavior that his peer Osamu Akaishi characterizes as that of a sycophant. Despite his bombastic exterior, Senda lacks real courage and is easily intimidated by those he perceives as being higher in the hierarchy. His insensitivity is evident when he bluntly intrudes on a sensitive topic regarding a resemblance to a deceased character, showing a lack of social filter.
Senda's role in the story is central to the Seishu baseball team's dynamic. He is the only one from his middle school's core group to pass the rigorous placement test and make the varsity team under the harsh new coach, Shuugo Daimon, a fact which initially inflates his ego further. He tries to order Kou around, believing his position grants him authority. However, his tenure as a pitcher on the varsity team is short-lived; his poor performance and numerous errors lead to him being demoted to the "prefab" or secondary squad, where Coach Maeno recognizes his true potential not as a pitcher, but as a shortstop. This transition becomes his lasting position on the team, where his quick feet and defensive range become valuable assets.
Senda's key relationships highlight different aspects of his personality. He considers himself Kou's best friend, although the sentiment is portrayed as being largely one-sided, with him frequently inviting himself along or expecting Kou to accompany him. He is infatuated with Aoba Tsukishima, who finds his advances and arrogant attitude completely unappealing. He also shares a connection with his teammates, including the gentle giant Osamu Akaishi, who often serves as a calm foil to Senda's loudness, and Daiki Nakanishi.
Throughout the series, Senda undergoes noticeable development. Starting as a shallow and boastful show-off, he matures into a more responsible and reliable figure as he accepts his role as the starting shortstop after the dismissal of Coach Daimon. He becomes a more integrated and dependable member of the team, leaving behind much of his earlier, more obnoxious behavior. His notable abilities lie in his fielding; while he lacks the finesse and composure for pitching, he possesses quick lateral movement and a reliable glove that make him an effective shortstop, often batting low in the order to utilize his contact skills.
