Description
Faldio Landzaat is a Gallian militia officer who serves as the lieutenant and tank commander of Squad 1. Born in the capital city of Randgriz around the year 1912, Faldio is the son of a university history professor. His upbringing in a wealthy, educated household allowed him to spend his childhood immersed in his father’s extensive library, and family trips to ancient ruins across the continent of Europa fueled a deep and abiding interest in archaeology. This passion led him to enroll at the University of Randgriz to major in the subject, where he became a close friend and schoolmate of Welkin Gunther. The two formed a strong bond, with Faldio frequently praising Welkin’s unique ideas and quirky personality.
In terms of personality, Faldio is often described as personifying charm, social grace, and warmth, a product of his advantageous upbringing in high society. Welkin remarks that every eligible young woman at their school knew Faldio by name and reputation. He is sensitive to fashion trends and takes considerable pride in his appearance, once submitting a proposal to redesign the Gallian militia’s uniforms, which was ultimately rejected for being impossibly florid. Despite his sometimes flamboyant exterior, he is fundamentally a serious and idealistic individual who speaks in a polite and measured tone. Faldio is a profound patriot whose love for his homeland, Gallia, is unwavering. This patriotism causes him to despise corrupt politicians and high-ranking officers who seek personal profit over the nation’s defense.
Faldio’s primary motivation throughout the conflict is to find a decisive way for Gallia to withstand the invading Imperial forces. His extensive knowledge of history and his obsession with the ancient Valkyrur people lead him to believe that the key to victory lies in their fabled blue-flame power. After witnessing the overwhelming might of the Imperial Valkyria, Selvaria Bles, Faldio becomes consumed with the idea of awakening a similar power within Gallia’s own ranks. This desperate search for a savior drives the central tragic conflict of his character.
In the story, Faldio is the leader of Squad 1, a position he was assigned due to his respectable educational background and military training. He serves as a narrative foil to his friend Welkin, often providing strategic insight and accompanying Squad 7 on key missions, such as the expedition into the Barious Desert to investigate the ruins of the Valkyrur. His most significant act occurs following the disastrous Battle of Naggiar Plains, where Selvaria inflicts massive casualties on the Gallian army. In a desperate, calculated attempt to turn the tide, Faldio shoots his comrade Alicia Melchiott with a sniper rifle, knowing that the near-death experience would forcibly awaken her dormant Valkyrur bloodline. This act of betrayal, committed for what he believes is the greater good of Gallia, shatters his friendship with Welkin and leads to a physical altercation between the two former schoolmates.
Faldio’s key relationships are central to his development. His friendship with Welkin is the most significant, built on mutual respect and intellectual admiration but ultimately destroyed by Faldio’s extreme actions. He also shares a complex dynamic with Alicia; while his decision to shoot her is a violation of trust, in the anime adaptation, this is complicated by a one-sided romantic interest on Faldio’s part. In the anime, Faldio’s role is expanded significantly, he interacts with Alicia more frequently, and his hesitation to sacrifice her safety is portrayed as more emotionally conflicting. Across all versions, his love for his country is ultimately superseded by his guilt and his desire to atone for betraying his friends.
Throughout his development, Faldio transitions from a charming, scholarly officer into a tormented figure willing to commit an unforgivable act for what he sees as a necessary outcome. After being court-martialed and placed in solitary confinement for shooting Alicia, he escapes his cell. His final act of redemption is to infiltrate the Imperial super-tank, the Marmota. There, he disables the energy supply fueling the artificial Valkyrur power of Prince Maximilian, before grappling with the Imperial leader and sacrificing himself as the vessel explodes. In the anime adaptation, his death is different; he detonates a grenade to eliminate a group of Imperial soldiers and allow Welkin to proceed.
In terms of notable abilities, Faldio is a competent officer with training that qualifies him as a tank commander and staff officer. His greatest assets are his extensive knowledge of history and archaeology, which he leverages to understand the ancient Valkyrur ruins and their secrets. Beyond the battlefield, he is a skilled horseman, having attended Gallia’s finest riding school. In his playable cameo appearance in Valkyria Chronicles 2, his personal potentials reflect his character: City Kid, which raises defense on paved areas; Fancies Women, which raises firing accuracy when women are nearby; Chatterbox, which can lower accuracy; and Patriot, which lowers his defense due to his concern for his country’s situation.
