Description
Keiji Maeda is a wandering samurai known for his free-spirited and flamboyant nature. He is the adopted nephew of Maeda Toshiie and his wife Matsu, and he is often seen accompanied by a small monkey named Yumekichi. His background involves a complex history with the brutal conqueror Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who was once a close friend. The friendship fractured due to Hideyoshi’s lust for power, and Keiji has carried the weight of this loss ever since.

In terms of personality, Keiji presents himself as a happy-go-lucky brawler who lives life on his own terms, treating battles like grand parties and disregarding formal rules or laws. He is known for his unabashed confidence and his love of festivals and pranks, particularly on his uncle Toshiie. Despite his seemingly carefree demeanor, he possesses a strong personal code of ethics; he believes in fighting fairly, admires bravery, and has a particular disdain for harming innocent people or the weak. He is often compelled to stand up for underdogs. Beneath his cheerful facade, however, he harbors resentment toward his family for objecting to his lifestyle and carries deep emotional turmoil from his past with Hideyoshi, sometimes using his jovial attitude to run away from his problems.

Keiji’s motivations are driven by a desire for peace and happiness in a chaotic world. He seeks to stop tyrants like Oda Nobunaga and later struggles to come to terms with Hideyoshi’s violent path. He believes in forming alliances to achieve a peaceful Japan and dedicates himself to protecting others, even those who might be irritated by his help. His role in the story is often that of a wandering mediator and a source of unpredictable aid. He moves between factions, serving under Uesugi Kenshin as a messenger and warrior, and attempting to unite rival warlords against common threats. He also acts as a mentor figure to younger warriors like Sanada Yukimura and Sakon Shima, encouraging them to be true to themselves.

Key relationships define his journey. His tragic bond with Toyotomi Hideyoshi is central to his character, as Keiji failed to convince his friend to abandon his brutal ambitions, a failure that continues to haunt him. He has a respectful relationship with his uncle Toshiie and aunt Matsu, despite their disagreements over his lifestyle. He is close friends with Uesugi Kenshin and later develops an immediate infatuation with the mercenary leader Saika Magoichi, dedicating much of his time to following and protecting her.

Keiji shows significant development over the course of the narrative. He begins as a vagabond who flees from responsibility, but he eventually matures into a more reliable figure. After Hideyoshi’s death and in later storylines, he takes up the position as head of the Kaga Maeda clan and commander of the Maeda Army, grappling with the weight of leadership while trying to remain true to his free-spirited nature. Through his encounters with others, such as mentoring the younger Sakon and bonding with Emperor Yoshiteru Ashikaga over their shared experiences of loss, Keiji learns to accept his responsibilities and pledges unwavering loyalty to his friends.

In combat, Keiji is a formidable warrior who wields a ludicrously oversized nodachi, a type of greatsword, which he is able to use with one hand. His fighting style is unique and flamboyant; he often throws the weapon’s massive sheath into the air, retrieving it just when needed to block or strike. His abilities allow for fluid, almost playful combat, reflecting his personality. He is also known for his resilience, possessing the ability to shrug off fatal blows as if they were a joke. He is frequently seen riding his beloved horse, Matsukaze, into battle.
