TV-Series
Description
Oda Nobunaga appears in Sengoku Basara - Samurai Kings as the commander-in-chief of the Oda army and the central antagonistic presence of the first season. He styles himself as the Devil King of the Sixth Heaven, a title that reflects how he is perceived by both enemies and allies, and he leads his forces under the motto Tenka Fubu, the idea of bringing the realm under control through overwhelming military power. In the story he is introduced as a warlord of unmatched strength whose advance throws the other factions into disarray, and he ultimately serves as the final threat that the other characters must confront.
His background within the series places him as a Sengoku-era conqueror who has built his army through fear and destruction. His soldiers are loyal to the point of willingly sacrificing their lives, but they follow him out of terror and reverence rather than affection. Nobunaga regards his own officers as tools to be used and discarded, and he extends no mercy even to his family. His younger sister Oichi is married off to Azai Nagamasa as a political arrangement, and his cruelty reaches her as well despite the bond of blood. He is eventually betrayed by his retainer Akechi Mitsuhide and killed by Oichi, yet death does not end his story, as he returns in later events having conquered the underworld and taken its power for himself.
In personality, Nobunaga is arrogant, cold, and utterly convinced of his own supremacy. He believes that order can only be created through force and that the will and feelings of others have no place in his calculations. He uses fear and despair as deliberate instruments of rule, and his presence alone is enough to unnerve entire armies, including his own. He shows no hesitation in crushing anyone who opposes him, and he treats negotiation and diplomacy as meaningless. At the same time, he is not a mindless brute; he demonstrates cunning in managing alliances and arranging marriages to further his position, and his rule is held together by a fearsome charisma as much as by terror.
His motivation is total dominion. He seeks to conquer the nation and eventually the entire world, and his conquest is described as an effort to swallow the land in darkness. His ambition extends beyond the mortal realm after his death, as he returns with the goal of ruling both the living world and the underworld, having already made himself the Demon King of hell.
Within the story, Nobunaga functions as the embodiment of violent order, standing against the other warlords and forcing them to define their own values in opposition to him. His key relationships are defined by fear and conflict. Akechi Mitsuhide serves him in a twisted master-servant dynamic that ends in betrayal. Oichi is both his sister and the one who ultimately kills him. Azai Nagamasa, his brother-in-law, becomes one of his victims despite leading a force that claims to oppose evil. Date Masamune, Sanada Yukimura, and Takeda Shingen all come into direct conflict with him, and their struggles against his power are central to the tensions of the story.
In terms of development, Nobunaga begins as a brutal mortal warlord whose ambition outstrips even his considerable power, is brought down by those closest to him, and is later reborn as something greater. After his return he is no longer merely a human conqueror but a demonic figure whose authority extends over the dead, and his later appearances present him as an even more formidable and otherworldly threat.
His notable abilities reflect this blend of human warfare and supernatural power. In combat he wields a curved sword alongside a sawed-off shotgun, and he can incorporate his cape into his fighting style. He is able to summon the souls of enemies he has slain and channel them into a single devastating attack. Following his resurrection, his abilities take on a distinctly demonic character, and his sheer presence, reinforced by his title as the Devil King of the Sixth Heaven, makes him one of the most dangerous figures in the series.
