Description
Android 17, originally a human by the name of Lapis, was transformed into a cyborg by the villainous scientist Dr. Gero along with his twin sister, Lazuli, who would become Android 18. This process granted him immense power and a perpetual energy reactor, giving him effectively unlimited stamina. Upon being activated, Android 17 displayed a rebellious and cunning nature. He pretended to obey his creator only to steal the remote control that could deactivate him, after which he mercilessly destroyed Dr. Gero.
In his initial appearance during the Android and Cell story arcs, Android 17 is portrayed as calm, stoic, and incredibly arrogant. He views the world as a playground and is driven by a desire for entertainment, treating the search for Goku like a game and showing little regard for the destruction he causes. Unlike his sister, who is often reluctant to fight, he seems almost giddy when challenged, taking pride in his power and proclaiming himself to be the strongest. Despite this reckless and anarchic behavior, he shares a close bond with Android 18 and shows a degree of loyalty to their companion, Android 16. His overconfidence leads to his downfall when he is tracked down and absorbed by the bio-android Cell, who seeks to use him to achieve his perfect form.
Following his death when Cell is destroyed, Android 17 is resurrected along with Cell's other victims through a wish on the Dragon Balls. After this experience, he abandons his previous mission and chooses to live a peaceful life, becoming a park ranger on a protected island. In this role, he demonstrates a profound change of heart, now valuing and protecting life, especially the wildlife under his care. This shift reflects a more serious and responsible personality, though he retains his deadpan manner of speaking.
Years later, Goku seeks him out to recruit him for the Tournament of Power, where he represents Universe 7. By this time, Android 17 has grown considerably stronger through training on his own, even while performing his duties as a ranger. In the tournament, he proves to be a strategic and powerful fighter, often working to protect his teammates. His actions show a heroic side, as he saves Android 18 and even Frieza from elimination, and ultimately attempts to sacrifice himself to save Goku and Vegeta. In a final act of growth and selflessness, he uses his wish from the tournament to restore all the universes that had been erased, revealing a deep-seated sense of justice and compassion that had developed over time.
