Description
Dr. Gero is a brilliant but vengeful scientist whose inventions drive a significant portion of the conflict. Originally a human, he served as the head scientist for the Red Ribbon Army, a criminal organization that was dismantled by a young Goku. Holding a deep grudge for this defeat, Gero dedicated many years to planning his revenge. He went into hiding and used his genius to create a series of powerful androids, all designed with the sole purpose of killing Goku. In his quest for power and immortality, he eventually converted his own body into a machine, becoming the combat model known as Android 20.
To ensure his creations would be strong enough, Gero secretly observed Goku and his companions for years, studying their battles and increasing power levels. He used this data to design and construct a series of androids. Among his many creations were Android 17 and Android 18, two former humans turned into cyborgs, and the ultimate biological weapon, Cell, who was created from the cells of the universe's greatest fighters. In a rare display of personal sentiment, Gero modeled Android 16 after his deceased son, a former high-ranking Red Ribbon soldier. He programmed Android 16 with a gentle personality, as he could not bear the thought of seeing his son's likeness destroyed in battle.
Dr. Gero's personality is defined by his cold, merciless, and obsessive nature. In the story of Dragon Ball Z Kai, Dr. Gero makes his first appearance as the mysterious Android 20. He and his partner, Android 19, attack a city to lure out Goku and the Z-Fighters. After Android 19 is destroyed by Vegeta, Gero attempts to flee, realizing he is outmatched. He retreats to his hidden mountain laboratory to activate his most powerful creations, Androids 17 and 18. This decision proves to be his downfall. Upon being activated, the rebellious and arrogant Androids 17 and 18 have no loyalty to their creator. They quickly turn on him, with Android 17 killing Dr. Gero by destroying his cybernetic body, thus ending his personal reign of terror.
After his death, his legacy continues through his master computer, which completed and unleashed the perfect android, Cell. Cell later achieves what Gero could not, killing Goku in a self-destruct explosion, though Goku was later revived. As Android 20, Gero possessed several notable abilities.
