Description
Captain Ginyu serves as the leader of the Ginyu Force, an elite group of mercenary warriors in the employ of the galactic tyrant Frieza. His name is a pun on the Japanese word for cow's milk, gyūnyū, which fits a naming pattern shared with his teammates that revolves around dairy products. In the body he occupies for most of his appearances, he is a tall, purple-skinned humanoid with two large, black horns on his head, red eyes, and pronounced veins on his cranium. He wears a distinctive V-neck style of battle armor that bears the symbol of the Ginyu Force.

Captain Ginyu is a complex figure whose personality blends ruthless professionalism with a peculiar code of honor. He is demanding and unforgiving, harshly scolding his subordinate Jeice for retreating from battle while others were defeated. Yet, he also demonstrates genuine care and fury upon learning of his teammates' deaths. He possesses a strong sense of pride and fair play in combat, refusing to take a cheap shot at an opponent or accept help from his allies during a one-on-one fight, a trait that other characters note as being perhaps honorable. Despite his goofy tendency to choreograph elaborate and theatrical fighting poses with his team, he is a highly calculating and pragmatic warrior who studies missions before acting. Above all, he is defined by his absolute and pure-hearted loyalty to Frieza, following his orders without question and even trying to serve his master's interests long after being transformed into a frog.

As the captain of Frieza's elite forces, Ginyu is sent to the planet Namek to retrieve the stolen Dragon Balls after Frieza's previous henchmen fail. He is initially positioned as a major obstacle, considered by Frieza to be a warrior that no one in the universe could surpass. His primary role in the story is as the final commander standing between the heroes and their confrontation with Frieza. During the battle, his relationship with Goku evolves from a competitive rivalry to a desperate struggle for survival when he is overpowered. After his defeat and transformation, his relationship with the main cast becomes one of comic relief and a persistent, minor nuisance, living as a frog on Earth and later returning in a new body during Frieza's resurrection to exact revenge.

Ginyu's most defining ability is his signature technique, Body Change. By shouting Change Now, he can fire a beam of energy from his mouth to swap his consciousness with that of another being. He typically uses this as a last resort against a more powerful opponent, often injuring his own current body first to ensure his target receives a damaged vessel. When he successfully swaps with Goku, his own power level in the new body drops dramatically from his original maximum of 120,000 to approximately 23,000, as he cannot immediately access the full potential of the Saiyan's power. The technique has the crucial drawback of requiring him to speak the command, a vulnerability that is exploited to trap him in the body of a Namekian frog. Beyond this unique power, he possesses standard abilities for a warrior of his caliber, including flight, energy blasts such as the Galaxy Dynamite, and significant superhuman strength and speed.
