Description
Mestre Kame, also known as Muten Roshi or the Turtle Hermit, is an ancient martial arts master who has lived for over three hundred years. He was trained by the great Master Mutaito alongside his rival, the Crane Hermit, and was the first human to climb Korin Tower and train under Korin. Centuries later, he became the founder and leader of the Turtle School, a discipline that emphasizes strength, speed, and endurance through unconventional methods such as wearing heavy turtle shells. He is the creator of the iconic Kamehameha wave, a technique he spent fifty years perfecting, and the inventor of several other ki-based attacks. Mestre Kame resides alone on a small island in a house known as Kame House, accompanied by his anthropomorphic turtle companion, Umigame. His personality is a stark duality: on one surface, he is a lecherous, lazy, and often foolish old man who obsesses over attractive women and spends his days watching television or reading magazines; beneath this, he is profoundly wise, selfless, and deeply committed to the growth of his students. His primary motivation is to train worthy successors who can surpass him and protect the Earth. He believes that martial arts are not just about combat but about living a balanced life of hard work, rest, and humility. Within Dragon Ball Z Kai, Mestre Kame’s role shifts from an active combatant to a mentor and moral anchor. Although his physical power is vastly outclassed by the Saiyans and other alien threats, he remains a crucial figure on Earth, offering counsel, encouragement, and occasional comic relief. He takes immense pride in watching his former students—Goku, Krillin, and Yamcha—grow into Earth’s mightiest defenders. His key relationships include Goku, whom he trained as a child and who carries his Kamehameha technique as a signature; Krillin, his second star pupil; Yamcha, a later addition to the Turtle School; and Bulma, whose subplot involving a promise of underwear highlights his comedic lechery. He also trained Grandpa Gohan and the Ox-King before the main story. Over the course of Dragon Ball Z Kai, Mestre Kame does not experience dramatic personal growth in terms of power, but he evolves in his acceptance of being a background figure. He no longer fights on the front lines but willingly serves as a wise advisor, frequently reminding the younger warriors of the importance of strategy, teamwork, and inner strength. His notable abilities include the Kamehameha, the Mafuba (Evil Containment Wave), the Bankoku Bikkuri Sho (Thunder Shock Surprise), and a muscle-mass-increasing transformation that briefly multiplies his power. He also possesses centuries of martial arts experience, exceptional battle intelligence, and the ability to suppress his ki. Despite his age, he can still demonstrate feats such as destroying the moon with a full-power Kamehameha. In Dragon Ball Z Kai, Mestre Kame stands as the living embodiment of the old martial arts tradition, a link between the classic era of Dragon Ball and the escalating cosmic battles of Z, and a testament that wisdom and heart matter even when raw power falls short.
