TV-Series
Description
Gregory is a small, green, flying creature who resembles a cricket or grasshopper, known as a Sprite. He serves as the loyal attendant, butler, and pet companion to the North Kai, the deity who presides over the northern quadrant of the universe from a tiny planet at the end of Snake Way. Gregory was not present in the original manga but was introduced as a regular character in the anime adaptation. Consequently, when Dragon Ball Z Kai was produced to follow the manga's story more closely, Gregory could not be completely removed and thus remained a part of this version's canon.

In terms of personality, Gregory is characterized by his deep respect and loyalty toward his master, the North Kai. He constantly speaks of the North Kai in a highly favorable light and is quick to become annoyed or irritated with anyone he feels does not show the deity proper respect, often being quite vocal and arrogant in his defense. When interacting with others, he can be a loudmouth, readily talking down to those he does not consider superior to himself, though this assertive behavior is balanced by a generally polite demeanor. His primary motivation stems from his role as a dutiful attendant, seeming to find purpose in serving the North Kai and participating in the deity's unusual training methods for new students.

Gregory's main role in the story is directly tied to the training regimen on the North Kai's planet. When a warrior, most notably Goku, successfully completes the first task of catching the North Kai's fast-moving monkey, Bubbles, the next challenge is to hit Gregory with a heavy mallet. Gregory assists in this training by using his incredible speed and agility to fly around and dodge the student's attacks, glowing like a firefly as he does so. Succeeding in this task is a prerequisite for the North Kai to begin teaching his powerful techniques in earnest. This event represents Gregory's most significant interaction, establishing him as a minor obstacle that helps measure a warrior's progress.

Regarding key relationships, Gregory's most important bond is unquestionably with the North Kai. The two are almost always seen together, alongside Bubbles, in the peaceful but monotonous life on the small planet. He shares a companionable but clearly subordinate dynamic with Bubbles, as both serve the North Kai. His relationship with Goku is primarily adversarial in a training context, as Goku must chase and strike him, and their interactions are often played for comedic effect. Gregory, Bubbles, and the North Kai ultimately meet their end when Goku teleports the self-destructing Cell to the North Kai's planet, and the resulting explosion kills them all.

Gregory does not undergo significant personal development throughout the series; his role remains consistent as the North Kai's mischievous yet faithful assistant. His most notable ability is his remarkable flight speed and agility, which makes him a difficult target to hit. An official movie pamphlet for Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might lists his power level as approximately 1,100, which is considerable for a small creature, though far below the level of the main Z-Fighters. His design and name might be a subtle reference to the protagonist of Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis, who transforms into a large insect.
