Description
Johnny, known in the original Japanese as Kyosuke Kasuga, is the main protagonist of the story. He is a fifteen-year-old high school student who has just moved to a new city with his family at the beginning of the narrative. Born on November 15, his birth year is given as either 1969 in the manga or 1972 in the anime adaptation. The entire Kasuga family, including Johnny and his two younger sisters, possesses inherited supernatural abilities known as "The Power," which they are forbidden from using in public. This strict rule stems from a family history of being discovered and exploited, which has previously forced them to relocate numerous times.
In terms of personality, Johnny is fundamentally a kind, gentle, and good-hearted young man. He has a strong sense of justice and cares deeply about the feelings of those around him. However, his defining characteristic is a profound and often paralyzing indecisiveness. This is not born from malice but from a genuine fear of hurting others and a desire to avoid conflict. While his intentions are usually good, he often acts in a cowardly or passive manner, particularly when facing difficult emotional choices. This leads him to occasionally use his psychic powers for selfish or perverted ends, such as attempting to steal a kiss, which creates a clear contradiction with his otherwise meek and polite exterior. He is also somewhat lazy and not particularly talented academically, often ranking near the bottom of his class despite receiving help from others.
Johnny's core motivation is to navigate the complexities of his social and romantic life without causing pain to those he cares about, all while keeping his supernatural abilities a secret. The primary driver of the plot is his inability to resolve the central love triangle he is caught in. His official girlfriend is the cheerful and affectionate Hikaru Hiyama, who fell for him after witnessing him perform an impossible basketball shot using his powers. However, Johnny's true feelings belong to her best friend, the beautiful, mature, and often mysterious Madoka Ayukawa. He spends much of the story trying to keep both girls happy, unable to bring himself to reject Hikaru for fear of breaking her heart, and too insecure to confess his love to Madoka, whom he believes is far out of his league.
Johnny's role in the story is that of the everyman protagonist whose personal drama and supernatural mishaps drive the narrative forward. His attempts to maintain his secret life create much of the comedy, as his powers often malfunction or are used carelessly by his younger sisters, landing him in even more trouble. Without his psychic abilities, he would be a fairly average and unremarkable student, but his kind nature is what attracts the two heroines to him, as they initially know nothing of his powers.
His key relationships form the emotional core of the story. With Hikaru Hiyama, he shares a relationship based on her energetic affection and his passive acceptance, struggling with the guilt of not reciprocating her feelings fully. With Madoka Ayukawa, his relationship is more complex and tense; he is drawn to her strength and hidden vulnerability, but he is often intimidated by her. The two share a mutual attraction that neither is willing to act on for Hikaru's sake. His relationships with his sisters, the practical Manami and the mischievous Kurumi, are a source of both support and constant frustration, as they frequently disregard the family rules about secrecy. His father is the enforcer of the no-powers-in-public rule, a directive that Johnny takes more seriously than his siblings.
Johnny demonstrates significant development over the course of the story. He begins as an extremely indecisive boy who is unable to assert his own desires. As the narrative progresses and he is forced to confront the consequences of his inaction, he slowly learns to become more assertive. He eventually reaches a point where he can make the difficult choice to be honest about his feelings, resolving the love triangle by confessing his love for Madoka and ending his relationship with Hikaru, despite knowing it will cause her pain. Later continuations of the story show him as a young adult who has become an intrepid photographer, a career that takes him to dangerous locations like the former Yugoslavia, indicating a significant departure from his passive teenage self.
Regarding his notable abilities, Johnny possesses a wide array of psychic powers. His most common abilities are teleportation, which allows him to instantly move from one place to another, and telekinesis, the ability to move objects with his mind. He can also perform "time-slipping," a form of backward time travel that activates when he falls from a height such as a flight of stairs. He can alter the function of mechanical devices like elevators and traffic lights, and can amplify his senses, such as focusing power into his ears to enhance his hearing. He has demonstrated hypnotic abilities, most notably using self-hypnosis in an attempt to become more decisive. On rare occasions, when pushed to extreme emotional states like rage or desperation when Madoka is threatened, his power can manifest as destructive raw energy capable of shattering concrete or shorting out all electrical devices in a large area.
