Description
In the French dub of the anime Kimagure Orange Road, Isidore is the name given to the character originally known as Kazuya Hatta. He is a supporting character and a close friend of the protagonist, Kyosuke Kasuga. Isidore is a student in the same class, 3A, and is almost always seen in the company of his fellow classmate and best friend, Komatsu, who is renamed Alex in the French version.
Isidore's primary function within the narrative is to provide comic relief. His personality is defined by his status as a typical adolescent boy, and his conversations and actions are overwhelmingly dominated by an obsessive and often perverted interest in girls. He and Komatsu are frequently depicted leering at female classmates, concocting schemes to gain their attention, and discussing matters of teenage romance and puberty with a distinct lack of subtlety or success. Their behavior is not intended to be malicious but rather serves as a source of broad, lighthearted comedy that highlights the comparatively more mature and conflicted nature of the main romantic leads.
Despite their role as the primary source of slapstick humor, Isidore and Komatsu are not entirely without purpose beyond being mere comic foils. On several occasions, their actions inadvertently propel the main plot forward. Their gossip and the schoolyard rumors they spread, particularly concerning the enigmatic Madoka Ayukawa, help to shape the social landscape of the school and reinforce her initial reputation as a dangerous loner. In this sense, they act as a kind of chorus or reflection of the student body's collective opinion, often functioning as an accelerant for the misunderstandings and dramatic situations that Kyosuke must then navigate.
As background characters, Isidore's relationships are narrowly defined. His most significant bond is with Komatsu, as the two are essentially inseparable. They operate as a comedic duo, with neither possessing a distinct or developed personality independent of the other. They are both friends and classmates of Kyosuke, though their friendship is more situational than deep; they are the people Kyosuke sits with at school and spends time with, but they are largely unaware of his psychic powers or the true complexities of his love triangle between Madoka and Hikaru. Their interactions with the female cast, including Kyosuke's younger twin sisters, are typically the source of their failed comic schemes.
In terms of development, Isidore remains a flat, static character throughout the series. He does not undergo any significant personal growth or change in perspective. His role is firmly established from his first appearance and remains consistent to his last, serving as a reliable and unchanging source of adolescent humor. He has no notable abilities, psychic or otherwise, and his primary skills are limited to being an ordinary, somewhat lecherous high school student. His value to the story comes not from his own journey, but from how his and Komatsu's actions create complications or humorous interludes for the main cast.
