Description
Kagura Sohma is a member of the Sohma family cursed by the spirits of the Chinese Zodiac, specifically the Boar. She is a petite young woman with a deceptively sweet and feminine appearance, often dressing in skirts or dresses and carrying a distinct orange cat-shaped backpack. This girlish exterior, however, sharply contrasts with her explosive inner nature. While she can be polite, considerate, and friendly, she is also incredibly impulsive, strong-willed, and prone to sudden, dramatic outbursts of physical violence. This duality is most pronounced in her dealings with Kyo Sohma, the family outcast cursed by the spirit of the Cat.

Kagura’s central motivation throughout much of the story is her obsessive and loudly proclaimed love for Kyo. She introduces herself as his fiancée, a claim stemming from a childhood incident where she threatened a young Kyo with a knife to force him into a promise of marriage. Her aggressive affection manifests as a cycle of clinging, declarations of love, and then immediately beating Kyo violently, an act she often seems to perform unconsciously before expressing shock at her own behavior. She believes that because she and Kyo can embrace without transforming into their zodiac forms, they are destined to be together.

The foundation of her feelings is revealed to be far more complex and self-serving than simple love. When Kagura was seven years old, she met a lonely five-year-old Kyo. At the time, she felt miserable about her own place in the family and, upon realizing Kyo was the scorned Cat, she felt relief that someone had it worse than her. She befriended him out of pity to make herself feel better. The pivotal moment in their relationship occurred when she forcibly removed the bracelet that suppressed Kyo’s true form, a grotesque and monstrous appearance. Horrified, she ran away, abandoning him. Overcome with guilt for her selfishness and cowardice, she tried to erase the memory of her actions by convincing herself that she loved Kyo. By accepting him, she believed she could transform into a "beautiful person" and absolve herself of the past.

Over the course of the narrative, Kagura’s role shifts from an antagonist to Tohru Honda, whom she initially views as a romantic rival, to a friend and a catalyst for Kyo’s emotional honesty. Her perspective is challenged by her cousin and housemate, Isuzu Rin, who bluntly criticizes Kagura’s self-deception. Eventually, Kagura confesses the truth to Kyo, admitting that her love began as pity and a way to escape her own guilt. She apologizes for her selfishness, and though Kyo does not return her feelings, he thanks her for playing with him when they were children. This acceptance allows Kagura to release her obsessive hold on him and genuinely support his growing bond with Tohru, even going so far as to slap Tohru to force her to confess her feelings directly to Kyo instead of hiding them.

Key relationships define her journey. Besides her intense connection to Kyo, she lives with her loving parents who take her volatile personality in stride. She also lives with the more reserved Rin; their relationship is initially strained by Rin’s cold honesty, but they grow closer over time, particularly after Kagura apologizes for an insensitive action. Kagura also forms a genuine friendship with Tohru, finding common ground in their shared love for the Cat of the zodiac. Physically, Kagura possesses notable superhuman strength, a result of her training at a dojo as a child, which she frequently uses to break furniture or send Kyo flying. This strength, combined with her impulsive, headlong rush into emotions, perfectly embodies the spirit of the Boar. Through her journey from guilt-ridden obsession to honest self-reflection, Kagura matures into a more stable individual who ultimately wishes happiness for Kyo and Tohru.
