Description
Hatori Sohma serves as the private physician to the Sohma family and holds the position of the Dragon in the Chinese zodiac, though his cursed form is that of a small seahorse rather than a mythical dragon, a fact he finds deeply embarrassing. He carries the heavy responsibility of performing a memory suppression technique, a form of hypnosis passed down through his family line, to erase the memories of outsiders who discover the Sohma clan's secret.

In his late twenties, Hatori is depicted as a tall, somber man who typically dresses in formal suits. His black hair usually covers his left eye, which was severely injured in a past incident, leaving him nearly blind in it. While his eye color varies in different adaptations, appearing as green or brown in some and purple in others, his default expression is one of seriousness and a notable lack of humor. This cold and to-the-point exterior often makes him appear intimidating, but this demeanor masks a deeply kind and gentle heart. He is the calm and level-headed anchor to his two best friends, the playful Shigure and the flamboyant Ayame, being the only one capable of restraining Ayame's worst behavior and the sole person Shigure trusts with his schemes.

Hatori's motivations and personality are profoundly shaped by a tragic romance that occurred two years before the main story. He fell in love with Kana, his assistant, who accepted him completely even after discovering his curse. She became like "Spring" to the "snow" within his heart. When he sought permission from Akito, the head of the family, to marry Kana, Akito responded with rage, attacking Hatori and permanently damaging his left eye. Akito then convinced Kana that she was solely responsible for Hatori's injury. Overwhelmed by guilt and despair, Kana's mental state deteriorated. Unable to bear her suffering, Hatori made the excruciating decision to erase all her memories of him and their relationship, forcing himself to watch as the woman he loved forgot he ever existed. After this, his heart became like frozen snow once more, and he resigned himself to the belief that members of the zodiac should not pursue love, as it only leads to pain.

His role in the story is often that of a stern but caring guardian and observer. He is deeply concerned for Tohru Honda upon her arrival, warning her to distance herself from the Sohmas to prevent her from suffering a similar fate to Kana. This protective instinct extends to the younger zodiac members, as he carries guilt over his duty to erase memories, such as when he was forced to wipe the minds of Yuki's first childhood friends, which created a lasting rift of distrust between them. He also feels remorse over erasing the memories of Momiji's mother.

Throughout the series, Hatori begins a slow journey of development. He continues to care for Kana from afar and is genuinely happy when he learns she has found love again with someone else. Eventually, through the manipulations of Shigure, he is pushed toward a new possibility for happiness with Mayuko Shiraki, Kana's best friend and a teacher at the local high school. In the end, his curse is broken, freeing him from the bond that dictated so much of his life, and he is seen looking toward a future with Mayuko, suggesting that his frozen heart has finally begun to melt. Among his notable abilities, beyond his medical expertise and the memory-suppression technique, he takes his duties with extreme seriousness and is often the voice of reason, even if his methods can be perceived as cold.
