Description
Hatori Sohma is a central supporting character in Fruits Basket, known as the Dragon of the Chinese Zodiac, though his cursed form is not a traditional dragon but an eight-centimeter-long seahorse. This form is a source of personal embarrassment for him. Physically, he is depicted as a tall and slender man with a perpetually somber expression. He has black hair styled with bangs that often cover his left eye, which was damaged in an incident prior to the main story, leaving him nearly blind in that eye. He is almost always dressed in professional attire, reflecting his position as the private doctor to the Sohma family.
Personality-wise, Hatori is the epitome of a calm, composed, and level-headed individual, often appearing cold and intimidating to those who do not know him well. He is the straight man to his two closest friends, Shigure and Ayame Sohma, and is rarely amused by their eccentric and often outrageous behavior. In fact, he is frequently the only person capable of restraining Ayame's worst impulses and the sole individual Shigure trusts enough to confide his secret schemes. Despite his stern and serious demeanor, Hatori possesses a deeply gentle and kind heart. He prioritizes the happiness and well-being of others above his own, a trait that is both his greatest strength and his most painful vulnerability.
Hatori's primary role within the story is as the Sohma family's personal physician. Beyond treating physical ailments, he is entrusted with a much weightier responsibility: the ability to suppress or erase the memories of outsiders who discover the family's secret of the zodiac curse. This power is a form of hypnosis passed down through his line of the family, and using it has caused him immense guilt and emotional pain, particularly when he has been forced to erase the memories of innocent people, including Yuki Sohma's childhood friends and Momiji Sohma's mother.
His motivations are deeply rooted in a tragic past. He was once engaged to Kana Sohma, his cheerful assistant who was able to melt the ice around his heart and whom he described as his "spring". However, when Hatori asked the head of the family, Akito, for permission to marry Kana, Akito flew into a jealous rage and attacked him, severely injuring his left eye. Akito then psychologically tormented Kana, making her believe the injury was her fault. Overwhelmed by guilt, Kana began to mentally collapse. Unable to bear watching her suffer, Hatori made the heart-wrenching decision to erase all of her memories of their relationship, sacrificing his own happiness to save her.
This event left him deeply scarred and resigned to the belief that members of the zodiac should not seek love or happiness, as it would only lead to pain. His heart is described as being like "snow," cold and frozen. Throughout the main story, he acts as a guardian figure, often warning protagonist Tohru Honda about the dangers of becoming too close to the Sohma family, out of a genuine desire to protect her from suffering a similar fate to Kana's. He is also a loyal and essential servant to Akito, forced to follow orders that often conflict with his own sense of morality.
Hatori's key relationships are central to his character. His friendship with Shigure and Ayame is a complex one; they have known each other since childhood and, despite their wildly different personalities, share a deep bond of understanding and loyalty. He is also responsible for monitoring the younger zodiac members' health, which sometimes creates strained relationships, as seen with Yuki, who lost trust in Hatori after he wiped the memories of his first friends. Later in the series, his friend Shigure orchestrates a reunion between Hatori and Mayuko Shiraki, the homeroom teacher of Tohru and the others, who is also Kana's best friend and had secretly harbored feelings for Hatori for years.
Hatori's development is a gradual process of thawing. Through his interactions with Tohru, who reminds him of Kana with her kindness and unique perspective, and through his reconnection with Mayuko, he begins to see the possibility of a future where he can accept happiness again. He is one of the later zodiac members to have his curse broken, and by the end of the series, he demonstrates growth by opening his heart, eventually dating and later marrying Mayuko.
In terms of notable abilities, Hatori possesses the hereditary power of memory suppression, which he employs by placing his hand on a person's forehead. He is also a skilled medical doctor, though his practice is almost exclusively for the Sohma clan. His zodiac transformation into a small seahorse is not just a quirk; it serves as a poignant symbol of the curse's arbitrary and sometimes diminishing nature, as Shigure notes that this form is a sign the curse is weakening from its original, more powerful dragon form. Despite his serious nature, this transformation often provides a moment of unintended comedy, but also serves as a reminder of the vulnerability and isolation that all the cursed Sohmas experience.
