TV-Series
Description
Ayame Soma is the older brother of Yuki Soma and is possessed by the spirit of the Snake in the Chinese zodiac. He is 27 years old, stands 175 centimeters tall, and is recognizable by his very long silver-white hair and striking golden eyes, which Tohru Honda notes make him strongly resemble Yuki. As the Snake, Ayame is particularly susceptible to cold temperatures and can transform into his zodiac form when exposed to strong winds or sudden chills, as well as when he is under extreme stress or embraced by a person of the opposite sex.
Ayame possesses an extraordinarily vivacious, flamboyant, and self-confident personality that dominates any room he enters. He is highly self-centered and often exhausts those around him with his theatrical energy and tendency to overlook other people's feelings in his enthusiasm. Despite being a grown man, he refers to himself using the youthful pronoun "boku," reflecting his boyish and unrestrained nature. According to the series creator, Natsuki Takaya, Ayame is the type of person who would be genuinely draining to meet in real life. However, beneath his seemingly frivolous exterior lies a charismatic individual who served as student council president during his high school years and possesses a natural ability to inspire others with his unapologetic self-love and freedom of spirit.
Ayame's central motivation throughout the story is his desperate desire to forge a close bond with his younger brother Yuki. In their childhood, Ayame was almost entirely absent from Yuki's life, to the point of forgetting he even had a brother. He watched their mother physically abuse the isolated and sickly Yuki without intervening, and when a young Yuki once reached out to him for help, Ayame coldly brushed him aside. As an adult, Ayame came to fear the "nothingness" of being alone and not being acknowledged, realizing that if he does not repair his relationship with Yuki, he will end up with no one. This realization sparked an obsessive campaign to win Yuki's love, initially through tactless demands and embarrassing public displays of affection, such as embroidering shirts with phrases like "I live for my older brother". Over time, his efforts become more thoughtful and sincere as he learns to understand Yuki's needs.
Ayame plays an important supporting role in the story, primarily as a comedic force and as a catalyst for Yuki's emotional growth. He is one of the three oldest cursed members of the Soma family, forming the "Mabudachi Trio" with his two best friends, Shigure Soma and Hatori Soma. While Shigure cheerfully enables and joins in on Ayame's outrageous behavior, Hatori serves as the only person who can effectively restrain him and bring him back to a more grounded state. Ayame's deep respect for Hatori is such that he will immediately stop his antics when Hatori tells him he has gone too far. Ayame owns and operates a shop named after himself that specializes in custom-made "romantic costumes," including frilly dresses and maid outfits, which he designs with the help of his seamstress and eventual romantic partner, Mine Kuramae. Mine lives with him in the apartment above the store, and she is depicted as cheerful, passionate, and one of the few people who can truly keep up with his exhausting energy. Yuki suspects that Mine is aware of the Soma family curse, though Ayame avoids confirming this directly.
Throughout the series, Ayame undergoes significant development in his relationship with Yuki. From a childhood of neglect and indifference, he transforms into a brother who actively tries to support Yuki in his own fumbling, over-the-top way. His efforts are not always successful and often annoy Yuki greatly, but gradually Yuki begins to accept Ayame and even appreciate his sincerity. Ayame demonstrates genuine brotherly care when he shields Yuki from their manipulative mother during a parent-teacher conference and later comes to Yuki's aid after he is injured by Akito. By the end of the series, Yuki has grown accustomed to Ayame and no longer merely tolerates him but accepts him as family.
Ayame's most notable abilities, aside from his zodiac transformation into a pale snake, are his formidable charisma, his talent for designing costumes, and his unusual immunity to the psychological manipulation of Akito, the head of the Soma family. Unlike many other cursed members who have been deeply traumatized by Akito, Ayame's indomitable ego and self-love appear to have made him largely untouchable, with Akito finding his presence unbearable. When the curse eventually breaks, Ayame is overwhelmed with happiness at his newfound freedom, and the first thing he does is embrace Mine and confess his love for her, declaring that he was born to love her. The name Ayame is derived from "Ayamezuki," which means "month of irises" and corresponds to the fifth month of the traditional Japanese calendar, the month associated with the Snake.
