Description
Lockon Stratos, born Neil Dylandy, is a Gundam Meister and a central figure in Mobile Suit Gundam 00. He hails from Ireland, where he witnessed the death of his parents and younger sister Amy in a terrorist attack carried out by the KPSA. This tragedy left him with a deep-seated resentment toward terrorism and a personal desire for revenge, which ultimately drove him to join the paramilitary organization Celestial Being. As the oldest of the four Gundam Meisters, he serves as the unofficial leader of the team and pilots the GN‑002 Gundam Dynames, a long‑range sniper mobile suit that allows him to engage enemies with exceptional precision from extreme distances.
Outwardly, Lockon is the most easygoing and approachable of the Meisters. He is kind, considerate, and often uses humor to lighten tense situations, acting as a big brother figure to his younger comrades, especially the reserved Setsuna F. Seiei. Beneath this relaxed exterior, however, he carries a smoldering internal anger that surfaces when he confronts terrorists or anyone connected to the KPSA, most notably the pilot Ali al‑Saachez. His judgment can be clouded by emotion in such moments, but he generally maintains a cool and composed demeanor in battle.
Lockon’s role in the story is that of a skilled marksman and a stabilizing presence within Celestial Being. His relationships with the other Meisters are pivotal: he mentors Setsuna, helps bridge differences between Allelujah Haptism and Tieria Erde, and shares a close working relationship with the tactical forecaster Sumeragi Lee Noriega. One of the most defining moments of his character arc occurs when he learns that Setsuna was once a child soldier for the KPSA and may have been involved in the attack that killed his family. Although he initially considers killing Setsuna, Lockon ultimately chooses to spare him, recognizing that their true enemy is Ali al‑Saachez and that his goal of eradicating war is more important than personal vengeance.
During a fierce battle against a coordinated UN forces assault, Lockon is severely wounded while defending the Gundam Virtue; the damage to his cockpit leaves his right eye impaired. Despite being ordered to rest, he insists on returning to combat. In his final engagement, he launches in the GN Arms and confronts Ali al‑Saachez in the stolen Throne Gundam. After a prolonged exchange, Lockon is overpowered. As a last resort, he ejects from his damaged Dynames, connects his sniper module to a drifting GN Arms cannon, and attempts to destroy Ali’s mobile suit. Both units are critically hit; Lockon drifts into space, and the cannon explodes, killing him. His orange Haro later retrieves the Dynames and returns it to the Ptolemaios.
Lockon’s legacy endures through his twin brother, Lyle Dylandy, who later takes up the codename Lockon Stratos and joins the reformed Celestial Being in the second season. Neil Dylandy’s memory continues to serve as an emotional anchor for the remaining crew, and his commitment to changing the world remains a driving force behind the organization’s actions. His exceptional marksmanship, strategic mind, and personal resolve make him one of the most memorable characters in the series.
