Description
Lunamaria Hawke is a Coordinator and an elite mobile suit pilot serving in ZAFT. She is one of the three elite pilots aboard the battleship Minerva and the only female member of its mobile suit squad, known for her bright and competitive nature. Born on July 26 in Cosmic Era 56, she attended the ZAFT military academy alongside her younger sister Meyrin Hawke, Shinn Asuka, Rey Za Burrel, and others, later being assigned to the Minerva. She pilots a custom red ZGMF-1000 ZAKU Warrior and later inherits the ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam after Shinn transfers to the Destiny Gundam.
Her personality is cheerful, strong-willed, and sociable, but she can also be stubborn and occasionally prone to jealousy. She develops an early romantic interest in Athrun Zala when he returns to ZAFT, but her attempts to get closer to him are complicated by the presence of Meer Campbell, a Lacus Clyne impostor, and by her sister Meyrin's own interest in Athrun. On orders from Captain Talia Gladys, Lunamaria secretly follows Athrun and discovers that Meer is not the real Lacus, a secret she keeps to herself. Later in the war, she is badly wounded in the Battle of Crete but recovers and takes over the Impulse. When Athrun and Meyrin defect together, Lunamaria is devastated and initially blames the enemy organization Logos rather than Shinn, who had destroyed the mobile suit they escaped in. She and Shinn grow emotionally closer, and they share a kiss and begin a romantic relationship.
During the final Battle of Messiah, Lunamaria learns that both Athrun and Meyrin are still alive aboard the Archangel. She refrains from attacking the Eternal when she sees Meyrin and instead fights Athrun, accusing him of taking her sister away. Her Impulse is heavily damaged by Athrun's Infinite Justice. When Shinn attacks Athrun in rage, Lunamaria interposes her mobile suit between them to stop the fight. She is saved by Athrun, and after Shinn is defeated, she lands her crippled Impulse beside him and holds him as they watch the Requiem weapon and the Messiah fortress crash into the Moon. In a later retelling of the ending, both pilots are rescued by Athrun, and Lunamaria joins Shinn and others in Orb to pay respects to his family, choosing to work alongside Kira Yamato and his allies for a peaceful future.
Lunamaria's motivations are rooted in her loyalty to ZAFT and her comrades, her desire to protect those she cares about, and her personal emotional struggles. She is a capable pilot with good combat instincts, though her shooting accuracy is noted to be less precise than her overall skill. Her development throughout the story involves navigating romantic rivalries, coping with loss and betrayal, and ultimately finding the strength to advocate for reconciliation rather than continued conflict.
