Description
Lunamaria Hawke is a Coordinator serving in the ZAFT military during the Second Alliance-PLANT War. She is one of three elite mobile suit pilots assigned to the battleship Minerva, and the only female pilot in its mobile suit squad. She initially pilots a red ZGMF-1000 ZAKU Warrior, later transferring to the ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam after her colleague Shinn Asuka takes command of the Destiny Gundam.

Born on July 26 in Cosmic Era 56, Lunamaria enrolled in ZAFT’s military academy alongside her younger sister Meyrin Hawke, as well as Shinn Asuka and Rey Za Burrel. She is described as bright, sociable, and cheerful, with a strong-willed personality. She can be stubborn and occasionally prone to jealousy, especially in personal matters. She is deeply loyal to her friends and comrades, and she shows particular care for her younger sister. To her superiors she is respectful and willing to carry out orders even when she struggles with them emotionally.

Lunamaria’s motivations are rooted in her sense of duty as a ZAFT soldier and her desire to protect those close to her. Over the course of the series, she becomes romantically interested in Athrun Zala when he joins the Minerva under the alias Alex Dino. Her attempts to get closer to him are complicated by the presence of Meer Campbell, the impersonator of Lacus Clyne, and by the fact that her own sister Meyrin also harbors feelings for Athrun. Under orders from Captain Talia Gladys, Lunamaria secretly follows Athrun during a meeting with his former allies Kira Yamato and Cagalli Yula Attha, during which she discovers that the Lacus Clyne working for PLANT is a fraud. She withholds this crucial detail from her report, torn between her loyalty to ZAFT and her personal conscience.

During the war, Lunamaria is seriously wounded when her ZAKU Warrior is heavily damaged in the Battle of Crete. After recovering, she assumes piloting of the Impulse Gundam. She is devastated when she learns that Athrun and her sister Meyrin have defected together and that Shinn has destroyed the mobile suit in which they attempted to escape. In her grief, she deflects blame onto the Logos organization rather than Shinn, and the two of them grow closer, eventually developing a romantic relationship. When she later discovers that both Athrun and Meyrin survived, her emotions become conflicted. At the Battle of Messiah, she confronts Athrun, blaming him for taking her sister away, but she ultimately interposes herself between Athrun and an enraged Shinn, pleading for them to stop fighting. In the aftermath, she comforts a weeping Shinn as they witness the destruction of the Requiem superweapon and the ZAFT fortress Messiah.

In the Final Plus conclusion, Lunamaria and Shinn are rescued by Athrun and come to meet Kira and Lacus Clyne, deciding to work together for a peaceful future. She continues to serve in ZAFT after the war alongside Shinn and Kira.

As a pilot, Lunamaria is competent and brave in battle, often serving as the team’s gunner or support unit. She is capable of holding her own in combat despite not being as naturally gifted as the series’ top-tier protagonists. Her emotional resilience and capacity for personal growth are central to her character arc, as she navigates loyalty, loss, and reconciliation throughout the conflict.
