Description
Dearka Elzman is a fictional character from the Cosmic Era timeline, appearing as a ZAFT mobile suit pilot. He is a Coordinator, born on March 29 in P.L.A.N.T., and his father, Tad Elzman, is a member of the PLANT Supreme Council. At the start of the First Alliance-PLANT War, he is a red-coated elite soldier serving under Commander Rau Le Creuset. During the attack on the neutral colony Heliopolis, his team successfully steals prototype mobile suits from the Earth Alliance, and Dearka becomes the designated pilot of the powerful long-range artillery unit, the GAT-X103 Buster Gundam.
Personality-wise, Dearka is initially characterized by a laid-back yet arrogant demeanor. He often expresses scorn or derision toward Naturals with a detached, sarcastic wit, which complements the more hot-headed and openly hostile attitude of his close friend and teammate, Yzak Joule. Underneath this cynical exterior, Dearka is pragmatic and less driven by pure ideology or ambition than his comrades, making him more flexible and approachable in certain situations. This pragmatic nature is key to his eventual development, as he is capable of reassessing his beliefs when confronted with new experiences.
Dearka's role in the story evolves significantly from an antagonist to a reluctant ally. He spends much of the first war pursuing the escaping Earth Alliance warship, the Archangel. However, during a fierce battle, his Buster Gundam is severely damaged, and with the Archangel's guns trained on him, Dearka chooses the pragmatic path of surrender to survive. While a prisoner aboard the Archangel, his worldview is challenged. After making a careless, insensitive comment about a fallen soldier to the crew member Miriallia Haww, she nearly attacks him, but her subsequent act of saving him from another crew member's wrath forces him to confront the humanity of those he considered enemies. His growing relationship with Miriallia becomes a primary catalyst for change, leading him to question the righteousness of ZAFT's war aims. After the Archangel defects from the Earth Alliance, Dearka is released and chooses to voluntarily pilot his repaired Buster Gundam alongside his former enemies to protect the neutral nation of Orb. He ultimately joins the Three Ships Alliance to fight against the extremist factions on both sides of the conflict.
Key relationships profoundly shape Dearka's path. His friendship with the aggressive Yzak Joule is a constant, providing support and camaraderie even when they find themselves on opposite sides of the battlefield. His relationship with Miriallia Haww acts as his primary moral turning point, though their romantic connection ends sometime before the second war, with Miriallia having ended the relationship. His service alongside Athrun Zala and later under his command also defines much of his military career.
Dearka shows notable development by the time of the Second Alliance-PLANT War in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. Having been pardoned for his defection but demoted from an elite red coat to a standard green uniform, he serves as the cool-headed second-in-command to Yzak in the Joule Team. While his sarcastic edge has softened, he remains a steadying influence on his volatile friend. He continues to pilot advanced ZAFT mobile suits, including the ZGMF-1000/A1 Gunner ZAKU Warrior and later the custom ZGMF-1001/M Blaze ZAKU Phantom. In the final battle of the war, he again joins a coalition to destroy the super-weapon Requiem, and in the aftermath, he is promoted to a black uniform, signifying a return to a high-ranking officer position.
As a pilot, Dearka's notable abilities lie in long-range artillery combat. His signature mobile suit, the Buster Gundam, is equipped with a 350mm gun launcher, a 94mm high-energy rifle, and shoulder-mounted missile pods, which could be combined for even more powerful anti-armor or long-range sniper attacks. His skill in providing heavy fire support from a distance is consistently demonstrated, making him a valuable asset in any formation he joins.
