Description
Crot Buer, also known as Clotho Buer, is a character from the anime Mobile Suit Gundam Seed. He is an eighteen-year-old soldier of the Atlantic Federation serving the Earth Alliance, where he is designated as a first-generation Extended, also referred to as a Biological CPU. Physically, he is notably short for his age, standing at approximately 165 centimeters tall with a slim build. He has distinctive red-orange hair and blue eyes.
As an Extended, Crot Buer is essentially a manufactured soldier, a Natural human whose physical and cognitive abilities are enhanced through the use of special drugs. His entire existence is defined by his function as a living weapon. Before combat, he and his comrades are administered performance-enhancing drugs that grant them reaction times and combat abilities capable of rivaling even Coordinator pilots. However, this power comes at a devastating cost; when the drug's effects wear off, he suffers from extreme pain and severe withdrawal symptoms that leave him vulnerable and mentally unstable.
Crot Buer serves as the pilot of the GAT-X370 Raider Gundam, a transformable mobile suit with high mobility and devastating firepower. He forms the Earth Alliance's elite mobile suit team alongside his fellow Extended pilots, Shani Andras and Orga Sabnak. They operate as a tactical unit under the command of the Blue Cosmos leader Muruta Azrael, often deployed from the battleship Dominion to eliminate the rogue vessel Archangel and its crew.
In terms of personality, Crot Buer is the most talkative and quarrelsome of the three Extended pilots. He frequently argues with his teammates and exhibits a childish and petulant demeanor. He is fiercely proud and becomes easily annoyed when things do not go his way in battle. His behavior in combat is particularly distinctive; he treats mobile suit battles like a video game, frequently shouting out battle cries such as "annihilate" or "sure kill" as he attacks his enemies. Between missions, he spends his free time perfecting his virtual marksmanship on a portable video game device, further reinforcing the idea that he views warfare as a form of play.
His motivations for fighting are not born from ideology or loyalty to the Earth Alliance. Instead, his worldview is brutally simple and survival-based. During a confrontation, he asks pilot Athrun Zala why he fights so desperately. When the question is returned to him, he reveals his grim logic: he fights because he wants to live. In his mind, the only way to ensure his own survival is to kill the enemy before they can kill him. This perspective reflects his conditioning, as he was raised from childhood as a tool for killing with no other purpose or future envisioned for him.
Throughout the series, Crot Buer serves as a recurring antagonist representing the darker aspects of the Earth Alliance's military doctrine. He is first deployed during the Earth Alliance's invasion of the neutral nation of Orb. In his early battles, his team lacks cohesion, with the three pilots often fighting as individuals and even firing on one another out of annoyance. Over time, they develop a degree of coordination, becoming a significant threat to the protagonists. He participates in key engagements, including the defense of nuclear missile transports aimed at destroying the PLANTs, viewing the resulting genocide and destruction with detached amusement as if watching fireworks.
Despite his combat enhancements, Crot Buer's skills are initially reckless and unrefined. However, over the course of the war, his piloting ability gradually improves. He makes effective use of the Raider Gundam's ability to transform into a mobile armor form, using its high speed to intercept enemies and disrupt their formations. He is capable of holding his own against ace pilots such as Kira Yamato and Athrun Zala, even managing to destroy the main camera of the Freedom Gundam in one engagement, temporarily disabling its pilot.
The character experiences a notable, albeit tragic, development arc. While he often appears arrogant and annoying, there are hints that his behavior is a psychological crutch to cope with his reality. As the war reaches its final stages at Jachin Due, his comrades Shani and Orga are killed in battle. Alone and with the effects of his combat drugs wearing off, he enters a state of psychotic frenzy. Subject to the agonizing pain of withdrawal, he loses all restraint and launches a desperate, suicidal attack against the pilots Yzak Joule and Dearka Elsman. In his final moments, he is no longer a soldier but a broken, suffering tool lashing out blindly. He is ultimately shot down by Yzak Joule, dying in the explosion of his Raider Gundam, which for a person used as nothing more than a weapon, serves as a final release from his torment.
