TV-Series
Description
Boris serves as the second-in-command to Balalaika, the formidable leader of the Hotel Moscow crime syndicate in the Thai city of Roanapur. A former soldier of the Soviet Union, Boris fought alongside Balalaika in the Soviet-Afghan War, where he served as her platoon sergeant. This shared history is reflected in how they address each other; Balalaika still calls him Sergeant, while he refers to her as Captain, maintaining their military ranks and the chain of command from their past lives.
Physically, Boris is a tall, broad-built man with a deep Russian accent. His most distinguishing feature is a large, prominent scar that runs diagonally from the right side of his forehead down to his left cheek. His typical attire consists of a dark green suit worn over a black turtleneck, and he is known to carry a USSR MP-446 pistol as his personal weapon.
In terms of personality, Boris is a calm, reserved, and highly disciplined individual. His defining characteristic is his unwavering and unconditional loyalty to Balalaika. He is fiercely protective of her and frequently expresses concern for her safety, especially when she decides to personally engage in combat operations in the field. Despite his hardened demeanor as a career soldier, he possesses a degree of empathy that sets him apart from many other denizens of Roanapur. He notably found it difficult to witness the suffering of a child, even an enemy like the killer Hänsel, during a tense confrontation. He often accompanies Balalaika in her office and wherever she travels, and is shown performing small acts of service for her, such as helping her put on or take off her military coat.
Boris's role in the story is primarily as Balalaika's adjutant, personal escort, and the de facto deputy commander of Hotel Moscow. He acts as a key intermediary between Balalaika and her soldiers, the elite Vysotniki, relaying her orders and reporting on the status of their operations. His presence is a constant in high-stakes situations, from meetings with rival mafia leaders to full-scale military assaults on enemy territory. During the Hotel Moscow campaign in Japan, he is present at Balalaika's side for tense negotiations and is responsible for summarizing battlefield intelligence and coordinating troop movements. He is also shown to be a calming and stabilizing influence, once advising Balalaika to accept an alliance with the Hong Kong Triad to better hunt down a pair of serial killers. In another instance, he was part of a tense standoff, aiming his pistol at Revy when she drew a weapon on Balalaika.
Boris's most significant relationship is, without question, with Balalaika. Their bond is forged from their shared military history, dating back to a time before they became criminals. His motivations are almost entirely tied to serving her, carrying out her will, and ensuring the success and security of their organization. He is the only member of Hotel Moscow who is consistently seen in her private office, indicating a level of trust and closeness that surpasses his official rank. While his interactions with other characters are mostly professional, he has a working relationship with the Lagoon Company, acting as a point of contact for Rock on at least one occasion.
Boris does not undergo a significant character arc or transformation throughout the series. He remains a steadfast and reliable pillar of support for Balalaika. His backstory, however, receives a notable, though non-canonical, addition in an omake (bonus manga). In this humorous side story, it is depicted that before his military service, Boris was a weak and effeminate-looking boy, a stark and shocking contrast to his current imposing and scarred appearance.
As a career soldier, Boris possesses a high degree of military competence. He is a capable leader and tactician, trusted by Balalaika to command their forces in the field and manage complex operations. His abilities include marksmanship, tactical coordination, and maintaining situational awareness in combat zones. His deep knowledge of military protocols and his unshakeable calm under pressure are his most notable assets, making him an invaluable and effective second-in-command.
