Description
Haruka Gracia is a shoemaker who comes from the moon. She arrives on Earthdash, specifically in Rolling Town, after becoming intensely interested in the Big Foot Basketball skills of Dan JD and his companions. Her primary goal is to develop and sell specialized basketball shoes for their Big Foots, using their rising fame to promote her business.
In terms of appearance, Haruka has a tall and slender yet curvaceous frame, with long, straight white hair that reaches past her hips and is typically kept in a ponytail. Her skin is tanned, and her eyes are black. She is often seen wearing a form-fitting black dress with white trims, black high heels, black anklets, crescent moon earrings, and a pair of black sunglasses.
Haruka possesses a highly unusual and defining personality trait: a deep fascination with feet. She has what is described as a fetish for feet and believes that feet tell the truth while words and faces can lie. This interest extends to a unique ability where she claims to be able to read a person's thoughts and character simply by looking at the shape and condition of their feet. Upon her first encounter with Dan, she demonstrates this by caressing his feet, much to his discomfort.
Her motivation is intrinsically tied to her past. As a child on a kindergarten trip to the border between the light and dark sides of the moon, she got lost on the forbidden dark side. There, she encountered giant, mysterious footprints that inspired her to become a shoe designer. For a long time, people laughed at her story, but James Loan was the first person to listen to her without ridicule. This established a foundational relationship between them, and it is hinted that she may still hold romantic feelings for him.
In the story, Haruka acts as a producer and catalyst for the main characters, particularly Dan. She sees the potential in their raw talent and orchestrates their travels and matches to promote the sport, which she helps rename as Basquash. She often finds her ideas and vision for the sport clashing with those of James Loan, creating a key source of tension in the narrative. In one instance, she directly intervenes to foil James’s plans for a professional league, favoring a more anarchic and exciting style of play.
Her key relationships include her partnership with Dan JD, whom she takes a liking to for pioneering new ways to play the game, and her more complex history with James Loan, a former ally whose direction for Basquash she opposes. She also works alongside the mechanic Miyuki, discussing the technical needs of the Big Foots.
Development-wise, Haruka remains a consistent driving force for the expansion of Basquash. A notable piece of her backstory is revealed when she explains the origin of her passion for shoes, linking her childhood on the moon to her current mission on Earthdash. This flashback provides context for her rivalry with James and her unwavering commitment to the sport.
Regarding her notable abilities, aside from her talent as a shoemaker and her business acumen, her most prominent skill is her foot-reading clairvoyance. She also possesses considerable influence as a producer, able to organize major events and travel across the world to scout and develop talent. A recurring and humorous element of her character is her physical endowment, which is explained within the series as a natural result of growing up in the moon's low gravity, a trait sometimes referred to as the Lunar Bust.
