Description
Dan JD serves as the main protagonist of the story. He is a young boy from Rolling Town, known in his community for his rowdy and rebellious nature and for being deeply in debt, owing a massive sum of 5.3 billion Rollings. He has a proud and straightforward personality, described as a wild child with a simple and direct way of thinking. His defiant attitude is fueled by a deep-seated grudge against the official sport of Big Foot Basketball, which he finds fundamentally boring and detestable.
His intense hatred for BFB is not arbitrary but stems from a personal tragedy. His younger sister, Coco, was an avid basketball player until an accident involving a Big Foot left her legs paralyzed, forcing her to give up her dream. This event created a deep trauma for Dan, and his primary motivation becomes finding a way to help her. He is fiercely devoted to his sister and believes the only way to cure her legs is to take her to the moon, where advanced medical treatment is available.
Before acquiring his own Big Foot, Dan adopts the secret identity of Dunk Mask. In this guise, he would sabotage BFB broadcasts by destroying television screens throughout the city, aiming to demoralize the sport's popularity. His life changes dramatically when he reunites with his childhood friend, Miyuki, a skilled mechanic. With her help, he obtains his own Big Foot, which he names Dangan. Using this machine, he crashes an official BFB game. While his intention was to cause mayhem, his raw skill and high-flying, acrobatic style of play, which notably included dribbling, captivated the audience and inadvertently made the sport more popular than ever. The resulting destruction of the stadium leads to his arrest, a one-year prison sentence, and the enormous debt that defines him for much of the story.
Rather than ending BFB, Dan's actions inadvertently create a new, freeform street style of the sport, which he and others come to call Basquash. He himself becomes a living legend, inspiring players across the world. The story follows his journey as he travels and competes, driven by the need to pay off his debt and earn a Moon Passport for his sister. As the series progresses, his personal goal becomes intertwined with a much larger destiny, as he is believed to be the Legend, a figure capable of throwing a thunderbolt ball, a radiant, lightning-infused shot that traces the shape of the heavens. This ability leads others to see him as a savior destined to prevent the impending collision between his home planet of Earthdash and the moon.
Throughout his journey, Dan forms several key relationships. He develops a strong rivalry with Iceman Hotty, a prodigy of official BFB whom he first encounters during his stadium invasion. This rivalry grows into a mutual respect and an alliance as they face greater challenges together. His bond with Miyuki is crucial, as she not only provides and maintains his Big Foot but also represents a connection to his past. With Rouge, a member of the popular lunar idol group Eclipse, Dan shares a more complex relationship. Initially, she is a rival on the court, and their competition leads to mutual respect and deepening feelings. At the end of the tournament, Dan promises to meet her on the moon, hinting at a romantic connection between them. He is also inseparable from his head-access partner, Spanky, a shapeshifting pet that transforms into the headband he wears as Dunk Mask. Spanky shares Dan's argumentative and hungry personality and often aids him in battles.
Dan JD undergoes significant personal development. One of his most notable hurdles is overcoming a psychological trauma that previously prevented him from successfully completing a dunk, a failure which he subconsciously associated with his sister's accident. With encouragement from Rouge, he is able to overcome this block and unlock his full potential as a player. In the final arc, after a failed attempt to save the world leaves him disheartened, he finds renewed resolve and passion for the game by witnessing Iceman's unwavering determination. Ultimately, it is revealed that he alone is not the Legend; rather, he is a part of it. His true role is to unite all basquashers, a term he himself coined for players of the sport, whose combined skills and thunderbolt balls are what ultimately save both worlds. In the aftermath, Dan is last seen playing basketball with Iceman, demonstrating that his love for the sport has never diminished.
