Description
Chihaya Ohtori is a seventeen-year-old transfer student who arrives at Kazamatsuri Academy, immediately standing out due to her unique brown suit and green-checkered uniform, a stark contrast to the standard attire. She possesses orange hair held by distinctive wing-like clips and bright blue eyes. Her initial encounter with the protagonist, Kotarou Tennouji, is an embarrassing one, as he finds her stuck in a tree and accidentally sees her underwear while helping her down. This incident sets a precedent for their relationship, as she often finds herself in clumsy situations that require his assistance.
Chihaya's personality is defined by a combination of sheltered naivete and a stubborn, tsundere disposition. Due to a very isolated upbringing, she knows little about the normal world, which makes her extremely clueless and prone to causing minor troubles. Despite being a rich heiress with a butler, she rarely acts like a typical ojou-sama. Instead, she is defensive and quick to argue, particularly with Kotarou, often claiming to hate him while her true feelings suggest otherwise. This difficulty in expressing her honest feelings is a core part of her character. She is also a massive glutton, happily consuming any food with "snack" in its name without any concern for diets, and possesses an unusually low tolerance for comedy, laughing heartily at poor jokes.
Her backstory reveals a tragic past that explains her current life. Chihaya is a monster master, a human with the ability to contract and command powerful beings known as familiars, and she belongs to the secret organization Gaia. As a child, she lived in a village where familiars were created, but the village was destroyed by the Guardian, an opposing organization. Her parents were killed, and she was forced to flee for her life. In a moment of desperation, she ran to a special cherry tree and begged for salvation. This tree came to life, and from it emerged Sakuya Ohtori, who became her contracted familiar and sworn protector.
Her relationship with Sakuya is the most significant in her life. Though he is publicly introduced as her older brother, they are not related by blood. Sakuya is not only her butler and guardian but also the source of her incredible abilities. Through their contract, Chihaya is able to wield a fraction of his immense power. This manifests as superhuman strength, allowing her to easily lift heavy objects like lampposts and refrigerators, and the ability to create white bandages that can form powerful barriers or be used in combat. She also maintains connections with other members of the Occult Research Club at school, including Akane Senri, whom she knew prior to transferring, and Shizuru Nakatsu, though she often quarrels with Lucia Konohana.
Her role in the story is central to exploring the conflict between Gaia and the Guardian. Initially tasked with protecting the Key, a being tied to the world's fate, Chihaya's primary driving motivation is the desire for genuine friendships and a normal life, something she was denied as a child. Her character development is most evident in her own dedicated story route, where she moves past her initial distrust of Kotarou. As he risks his life to protect her, she learns to open her heart, eventually confessing her love for him. Her journey involves learning to fight for herself and her companions, rather than simply relying on Sakuya's overwhelming power, ultimately striving to find a peaceful resolution outside of the two organizations' destructive goals.
