Description
Mitsuki is a twelve-year-old girl who dreams of becoming a professional singer. She grew up in an orphanage after the death of her parents and later came to live with her strict grandmother, who forbids her from singing. Mitsuki suffers from a malignant throat sarcoma, a form of cancer that makes it difficult for her to breathe and sing loudly. She refuses a life-saving surgery that would damage her vocal cords and take away her ability to sing, as music is more important to her than her own life.
Her primary motivation stems from a promise she made to Eichi Sakurai, a boy she met and fell in love with at the orphanage. Eichi was adopted and moved to America, and the two promised to pursue their dreams: Mitsuki would become a singer, and Eichi would become an astronomer. They agreed that whenever they felt lonely, they would look up at the full moon and think of each other. Mitsuki’s burning desire to reunite with Eichi drives her to take extraordinary risks.
When two shinigami, Takuto and Meroko, appear and tell her she has only one year to live, Mitsuki runs away from home to chase her dream. Takuto, moved by her determination, gives her a pill made from his blood that transforms her into a healthy, sixteen-year-old version of herself known by the stage name Full Moon. In this form, she is free of cancer and able to sing with full strength. She signs a contract with Seed Records and begins her career as a pop idol, all while hiding her true identity and illness from the public and her grandmother.
Mitsuki has a cheerful, innocent, and hopeful personality. Even as her condition worsens, she remains optimistic and finds the bright side in every situation. She is fiercely determined and brave, willing to face death to fulfill her dreams. Her love for singing is so profound that she says she is more afraid of not being able to sing than of dying. She also possesses a warm, loving heart that draws people to her, and she forms deep bonds with those around her.
Throughout the story, Mitsuki plays the central role of the protagonist. Her journey is about more than becoming a singer; it is a story of coming to terms with mortality, love, and loss. As she grows as an artist, she also matures emotionally. She learns that Eichi died shortly after leaving the orphanage, but she had kept this secret. With Takuto's help, she finally accepts his death and begins to move forward. Her feelings for Takuto also deepen, and she eventually realizes that she has found a new love.
Key relationships include Eichi Sakurai, whose memory and promise initially drive all of her actions. Takuto Kira, the shinigami who becomes her protector, guide, and eventually her romantic interest. Meroko Yui, the other shinigami assigned to her, who becomes a loyal friend despite her jealousy and clumsiness. Mitsuki’s grandmother, Fuzuki, who is strict out of concern for her health but ultimately supports her. And later, Izumi, a former shinigami, and other figures in the music industry shape her path.
Mitsuki’s notable ability is her extraordinary singing voice, which can convey deep emotion and move audiences profoundly. In her transformed state as Full Moon, she can sing without restriction and her voice becomes her most powerful tool. She also gains the ability to see and interact with shinigami, which is not possible for ordinary humans. Through her transformation, she experiences temporary health and a older appearance, but the effect is temporary and her real body remains ill.
Over the course of the series, Mitsuki develops from a shy, sickly girl into a confident and beloved singer. She learns to let go of the past, forgive herself, and embrace the present. After a confrontation with the shinigami authorities, it is revealed that her fate was changed because of her connection to the shinigami, and she no longer has to die. She undergoes surgery to remove the tumor, survives, and eventually resumes her singing career under her own name. In the end, she reunites with Takuto, who has recovered from a coma, and they confess their feelings for each other.
