Description
Jonathan is a male baby seal and a supporting character in the anime Kaleido Star. He is discovered by the main protagonist, Sora Naegino, on a beach after she accidentally trips over him while he is lying on the sand. Sora takes him back to her dormitory room at the Kaleido Stage, intending to care for him. The date of this discovery, June 29th, is later treated as his birthday.

As a very young seal, Jonathan expresses himself only through simple barks, making him unable to communicate verbally with most humans. Despite this, he is notable for a playful and comical nature, and he demonstrates a surprising capacity for learning tricks and coordinating his movements in a performance setting. His presence initially causes complications for Sora, as keeping a pet is against the rules and his discovery by the star performer Layla Hamilton creates a conflict. To afford his food, Sora takes on a part-time job and eventually enters a juggling contest with her friends Anna and Mia. During the contest, Jonathan unexpectedly joins the act and displays his own juggling abilities, helping the group win the prize money needed for his upkeep. Following this event, the owner of the Kaleido Stage, Kalos Eido, is convinced to allow Jonathan to stay permanently, and a dedicated tank is built for him by an employee named Jake Benigni. From this point, Jonathan becomes the official mascot of the Kaleido Stage.

Jonathan’s primary role is that of a mascot and a performer, especially in acts designed for younger audiences. He is most frequently seen riding on the head of Marion Benigni, a young girl who becomes his primary caretaker and performance partner. In the second season of the anime, his bond with Marion deepens to the point where he refuses to perform with anyone else, and Marion appears to be the only person who can understand his seal barks. He also shares a close bond with Sora, who is his rescuer and initial guardian.

Jonathan demonstrates a few unique and notable abilities beyond typical animal tricks. He has a moment of inexplicable perception in which he is able to see Fool, the normally invisible spirit who watches over the Kaleido Stage. This event occurs only once and is never explained. He is also a capable performer, as shown by his unexpected juggling skill that complements or even surpasses Sora's. In subsequent original video animation releases, Jonathan and Marion are featured in skits where they teach seal facts and attempt to teach the seal language to Sora. He also contributes to the franchise’s music with a duet song titled "M&J" performed with Marion.
