Description
Masamune Takano, born Masamune Saga, grew up in a moderately wealthy yet emotionally distant household. His lawyer mother and surgeon father remained largely absent due to work, leaving him alone from a young age. Though financially supported, their failure to attend school events deepened his isolation. Seeking refuge from his parents' arguments, he frequented the school library, cultivating a love for reading and adopting a rescued cat named Sorata, who became his sole companion against loneliness.

As a taciturn high school student, he rarely displayed emotion yet remained popular. His bleak worldview saw kindness as inherently self-serving. This changed when Ritsu Onodera noticed his hidden sadness and genuinely cared. Their relationship sparked after Ritsu's accidental confession while reaching for a book Takano retrieved. Bonding over literature fostered deep emotional intimacy. Takano confessed his love during their first intimate encounter, though Ritsu doubted hearing it clearly. The relationship shattered due to misunderstanding: Takano's nervous laugh in response to Ritsu asking if he loved him was taken as mockery. Ritsu vanished without explanation, coinciding with Takano discovering he wasn't his father's biological son and rumors of Ritsu's fiancée, triggering his emotional collapse.

After his parents' divorce, he moved to his maternal grandmother's home in Kagawa Prefecture, adopting her surname, Takano. Returning to Tokyo for college, he met Takafumi Yokozawa, who provided vital support through his depression, leading to a brief physical relationship. Takano spiraled into self-destructive drinking and promiscuity, haunted by unresolved feelings for Ritsu. Yokozawa remained a steadfast friend, aiding his emotional stabilization.

Professionally, Takano initially edited shounen manga at Shuudansha but resigned facing creative constraints and harassment. Colleague Arata Haitani, seeking revenge after his partner developed unrequited feelings for Takano, publicly exposed personal issues and sabotaged his professional relationships, also engineering the end of Takano's brief relationship with a female coworker. With Yokozawa's help, he joined Marukawa Publishing as editor-in-chief of the shoujo manga department, Emerald. His strict, results-driven leadership earned both respect and envy.

A decade post-high school, Ritsu joined Emerald as an editor. Unrecognized initially due to surname changes and time, Takano gradually identified him through familiar mannerisms. After confirmation, Takano kissed him to provoke recognition, though Ritsu remained unaware of their past. Driven by lingering feelings and fear of permanent loss, Takano resolved to make Ritsu fall in love again. This dynamic revealed his contrasting personas: publicly stern and controlled, yet privately vulnerable with Ritsu. Intimate moments betrayed his composed exterior through a rapid heartbeat, reflecting deep-seated insecurity about their relationship's fragility.
