Description
Jerso is a character from the military fantasy series Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. He is a soldier in the Amestrian State Military who was forcibly subjected to alchemical experiments, transforming him into a human-based chimera. As a result of these experiments, he gained the ability to shift his form into a large, toad-like or frogfish-like creature. He is almost always seen alongside his partner and fellow chimera, Zampano.

Before his transformation, Jerso was a military police officer and a family man with a wife and daughter. His status as a chimera filled him with a deep sense of shame regarding his lost humanity, and he refused to return to his family because of what he had become. When he is first introduced, Jerso comes across as a quiet and serious soldier, but this facade hides a personality that is actually quite friendly, talkative, and humorous. After defecting from the military, his more positive and comical traits become more apparent, and he often makes lighthearted jabs at his partner Zampano.

Jerso's primary motivation throughout the story is to find a way to reverse his condition and regain his original human body. This desire is what ultimately drives him to betray his original commander, the Crimson Alchemist Solf J. Kimblee. While acting as one of Kimblee's bodyguards during a mission to the northern region of Amestris, Jerso and Zampano are defeated by the Elric brothers and taken prisoner. Rather than face execution, they are persuaded by Alphonse Elric to join his group on the promise that a method to restore their humanity might exist. They defect and become key allies to the Elrics and their cause.

In his role in the story, Jerso serves as a supporting ally and combatant. He and Zampano assist the group in battles against the homunculus Envy at an Ishvalan refugee camp. Later, during the final battle to stop Father's plan, he aids in the invasion of Central City. In one notable instance, he uses his unique ability to subdue the Gold-Toothed Doctor by trapping him with his adhesive saliva. He is later wounded in combat against the homunculus Pride, which incapacitates him for the remainder of the main conflict. In the series' epilogue, Jerso is last seen with Zampano in a café, discussing methods to restore their bodies. They decide to travel to the nation of Xing with Alphonse Elric, who has offered to accompany them as a bodyguard as he studies new forms of alchemy to help reverse their chimera transformations.

Jerso's most notable abilities stem from his chimera physiology. He possesses superhuman strength, endurance, and agility, able to perform impressive acrobatic feats despite his bulky frame. His most distinctive power is the ability to produce an extremely sticky, glue-like saliva from his mouth in his chimera form. This substance is highly versatile; he can use it to immobilize enemies by gluing them in place, or even thicken it to create a rope-like strand for climbing or restraining purposes. A limitation of this ability is that he can temporarily run out of saliva after prolonged use in combat. After the conclusion of the main events, he also begins studying alchemy in the hopes of finding a way to return to his original human state.
