Description
Chiaki Yoshino is a popular shoujo manga artist publishing under the female pen name Chiharu Yoshikawa in Emerald magazine, believing a male author might alienate his predominantly female readers. His true gender remains known only to a few staff. While professionally successful, his intense work schedule leads to neglected nutrition and sleep during deadlines, resulting in an underweight physique. He depends heavily on others for domestic chores, especially cooking, and exhibits a pronounced preference for sweet foods. His personal life revolves around two longtime friends: childhood companion and editor Yoshiyuki Hatori, and junior high friend Yuu Yanase, his chief manga assistant.
Chiaki and Hatori share a bond stretching back to elementary school, attending the same institutions through college. When Chiaki struggled to manage college and manga, Hatori vowed support and later became his editor to stay close. Their dynamic shifted when Hatori kissed a sleeping Chiaki and confessed lifelong romantic feelings, fearing rejection. Initially confused—partly due to mistakenly believing Hatori dated Yuu—Chiaki panicked at Hatori's decision to create distance. To stop this, Chiaki demanded another kiss to test compatibility, sparking their romantic relationship.
Chiaki's feelings for Hatori evolved gradually. He initially grappled with distinguishing deep friendship from love but developed possessiveness, experiencing jealousy over Hatori's interactions with an ex-girlfriend. This jealousy, combined with introspection after punching Yuu for forcing himself on him, clarified that Hatori was the only man Chiaki could be intimate with. He affirmed his genuine love during a breakup attempt by Hatori, insisting he would never date a man out of sympathy and that his attraction was exclusive to Hatori. Their relationship, characterized by domestic interdependence where Hatori manages cooking and household tasks, is dubbed "Domestica" by fans.
Chiaki's friendship with Yuu is complicated by Yuu's unrequited love, which Chiaki consistently dismisses as joking. When Yuu confessed and later assaulted him, Chiaki reacted violently and stated unequivocally that he could never reciprocate romantically. Despite this, they remain friends and colleagues, with Yuu's efficiency as an assistant being vital to Chiaki's work. Chiaki also has a sister, Chinatsu Yoshino; their dynamic involves typical sibling conflicts, and he feels jealousy upon learning of her crush on Hatori, though she remains unaware of their relationship.
In the Proposal Edition OVA, Chiaki casually tells his mother during a visit home that he would marry Hatori, prompting her to discuss dowry preparations. This surprises Hatori, but Chiaki later affirms he genuinely would not mind marrying him, signaling deeper commitment. His bed preferences contrast his domestic habits—he owns a large bed but favors sleeping in Hatori's smaller one. Across all media, Chiaki evolves from emotional obliviousness to actively acknowledging and fighting for his love, demonstrating increased self-awareness regarding his feelings and relationships.
