Description
Solf J. Kimblee, also known as the Crimson Alchemist, is a former State Alchemist and a major antagonist in the series. His background is rooted in the Ishvalan War of Extermination, where he served as a one-man weapon of mass destruction. Kimblee was so effective and ruthless in this conflict that he was entrusted with a Philosopher's Stone to amplify his destructive capabilities, a unique privilege among the State Alchemists. After the war, he was imprisoned for murdering his own superior officers, an act committed to keep the Philosopher's Stone for himself.
Kimblee is a slender man with long, straight black hair, piercing blue eyes, and a pale complexion. He typically dresses in a distinctive white suit with a long coat and hat, presenting a dapper and unnervingly calm appearance. His most defining physical feature is the pair of transmutation circles tattooed on his palms; the sun symbol on his right hand and the moon symbol on his left.
His personality is a complex blend of cold, polite indifference and profound psychopathy. Kimblee is a sadist who takes genuine, aesthetic pleasure in explosions and death, earning him the moniker the Mad Bomber. However, he is not a mindless brute. He is highly intelligent, philosophical, and conducts himself with an almost gentlemanly courtesy, even towards his enemies. His core motivational drive is a deep-seated curiosity about the strength of individual convictions. He holds an extreme version of survival of the fittest, believing that one's worth is proven by how unwaveringly they adhere to their own ideals, regardless of what those ideals are. Consequently, he despises hypocrisy and cowardice above all else, viewing those who betray their principles for convenience as the lowest form of life.
In the story, Kimblee is released from prison to serve as a special agent for the Homunculi, directly under King Bradley. His primary mission is to hunt down Scar and the fugitive Dr. Tim Marcoh. He is deployed to the northern region of Briggs, where he acts as a foil to the principled Major General Olivier Armstrong. His role is that of a wild card, a powerful and unpredictable asset whose loyalty is not to any person or nation, but only to his own twisted philosophy and the spectacle of the conflict.
Kimblee's key relationships are defined by his philosophy. He has a memorable encounter with Winry Rockbell, whose parents were doctors who stayed in Ishval to treat the wounded. When he learns of this, he sincerely expresses admiration for their dedication, showing his respect for those who die for their beliefs, even when those beliefs oppose his own. He serves as an arch-enemy to Scar, having personally killed Scar's family and wounded him during the Ishvalan war. In a display of his formidable memory, Kimblee can precisely recall the details of their first encounter years later. He also works closely with the Homunculus Pride, forming an alliance of convenience. While Pride views Kimblee as a useful tool, Kimblee sees the Homunculi as another species to observe in his personal experiment to see which ideology proves stronger.
Throughout the series, Kimblee undergoes little emotional change but faces a significant test of his will. After being mortally wounded by the chimera Heinkel, he is absorbed by Pride to be used as fuel for his Philosopher's Stone. Inside a sea of screaming, tormented souls, where most individuals would lose their identity, Kimblee’s sheer force of will and his unique nature allow him to not only remain conscious but to find the cacophony pleasant. When Pride later abandons his own pride and principles by attempting to possess a human body out of desperation, Kimblee, enraged by this hypocrisy, is able to temporarily seize control from within, crippling the Homunculus and allowing Edward Elric to defeat him. This final act is the ultimate expression of his character: not a redemption, but a vindication of his unwavering commitment to his own bizarre code.
Kimblee's notable abilities center on his unique form of explosive alchemy. By bringing his tattooed palms together to form a complete hexagram, he can transmute any matter into an explosive, creating blasts of varying magnitudes. He is a highly capable combatant, demonstrating impressive speed, agility, and durability, able to fight effectively against skilled opponents like Scar and Alphonse Elric even after being severely injured. When augmented with a Philosopher's Stone, his power increases exponentially, allowing him to bypass the law of equivalent exchange and create massive, town-leveling explosions with a single hand. Beyond his alchemy, he possesses a photographic memory, which he considers a professional courtesy to his victims, and heightened situational awareness honed on the battlefield.
