Description
Zala, better known by her alias Miss Doublefinger, is the second highest ranking female officer agent within the criminal organization Baroque Works, serving directly under the leadership of Sir Crocodile. In the film One Piece: The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventure in Alabasta, she is deployed alongside her partner Mr. 1 to intercept the Straw Hat Pirates and ensure the success of Crocodile’s plan to destabilize the kingdom.
Under the assumed identity of Paula, she operates the Spiders Cafe in the port town of Nanohana, using the establishment as a cover for Baroque Works activities. Her demeanor is composed, professional, and detached, reflecting the institutional discipline of a career operative rather than a personally vengeful enemy. She moves with a deliberate, swaggering gait and speaks with a calm condescension, particularly toward opponents she considers outmatched.
Miss Doublefinger’s allegiance is to the organization and its hierarchy. Her motivations are professional rather than ideological; she executes her orders efficiently and without evident personal malice, viewing her missions as assignments to be completed. She demonstrates loyalty to her partner Mr. 1 and respect for the chain of command.
In the film, she engages in direct combat with Nami, whom she initially dismisses as unprepared. Their confrontation serves as a significant test for Nami, who must overcome her own doubt to prevail. Miss Doublefinger is defeated when Nami uses the enhanced Clima-Tact to turn the environment against her, marking a key victory for the Straw Hats.
Her relationship with Mr. 1 is one of professional partnership. They coordinate operations effectively but do not display personal closeness beyond their shared duties. She also interacts briefly with other officer agents and with Nico Robin and Crocodile as part of the larger Baroque Works network.
After the fall of Baroque Works, in the events portrayed in the manga’s cover story arcs, Miss Doublefinger escapes captivity and returns to civilian life, genuinely running the Spiders Cafe alongside other former agents. This development suggests an ability to adapt and leave behind her criminal past, though the film itself does not depict this later sequence.
Her most notable ability comes from the Toge Toge no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows her to sprout sharp, razor-like spikes from any part of her body. She uses this power both offensively and defensively, turning her limbs into piercing weapons, generating a protective armor of spines, and even increasing her muscle mass by injecting spikes into her own arms. Her combat style also incorporates acrobatic maneuvers, and she can use her spikes to anchor herself to walls and ceilings, allowing her to traverse vertical surfaces. Her physical conditioning and tactical training make her a capable mid-tier fighter, dangerous enough to threaten non-combat specialists but ultimately outmatched by the creativity and resolve of the Straw Hat crew.
