Description
Koza is a childhood friend of Princess Nefertari Vivi and a native of the desert kingdom of Arabasta. He grows up in a small village outside the capital, Alubarna, raised by his father Toto. At age nine, a severe drought hits his home, and he travels to the palace to confront King Nefertari Cobra over the suffering of his people. Though the king explains his inability to control the weather, he is impressed by the boy’s courage and love for his country. After his family relocates to a farm near Alubarna, Koza forms a gang of local children called the Sand-Sand Clan, and Vivi, seeking a rematch after their initial meeting, ultimately befriends him and becomes the clan’s deputy leader. During one adventure, a bandit named Agotogi tries to kidnap Vivi, and Koza risks his life to protect her, overcoming the assailant but gaining a permanent scar over his left eye.
As an adult, Koza becomes the leader of the Arabasta Rebellion, an army of two million citizens who have been deceived into believing the monarchy is responsible for the kingdom’s drought and for using illegal dance powder. His personality is defined by fierce loyalty, a short but righteous temper, and an unshakeable sense of justice. He loves his homeland deeply and will break rules or defy authority if he believes the people are suffering. A natural-born leader from childhood, he commands immense respect and can mobilize and calm a massive army with a single order.
In the film, Koza’s rebel forces are manipulated by the Baroque Works syndicate. Agents disguised as royal soldiers destroy the port town of Nanohana, and Koza, witnessing this, leads his army to attack the capital, Alubarna. His motivation is the protection of his country, and he genuinely believes he is liberating Arabasta from a corrupt king. During the battle, he discovers the truth: Sir Crocodile, the mastermind behind Baroque Works, had orchestrated the conflict. Koza gets shot multiple times while trying to stop the fighting, but his endurance allows him to survive and later speak to both armies, revealing Crocodile’s deception. He then works with Princess Vivi and the royal guard to end the war and restore peace.
Key relationships center on Vivi and his comrades. He shares a deep, sibling-like bond with the princess, forged in childhood and tested by the rebellion. He also respects his father Toto, though he defies him when he believes it necessary, and earns the admiration of King Cobra for his unwavering determination. After the conflict, Koza goes on to serve as the environmental minister of Arabasta, a role that reflects his lifelong commitment to the kingdom’s well-being.
In terms of abilities, Koza is an exceptional leader with great courage and charisma, able to inspire and direct millions. He possesses remarkable physical endurance, surviving multiple gunshot wounds and returning to action within a day. As a youth, he fought with a crude wooden club, strong enough to knock out a grown man. As a rebel leader, he wields firearms and a sword, having received basic swordsmanship training from the royal guard Chaka, though his combat skills are competent rather than extraordinary. After the timeskip, he carries a pistol and wears desert goggles, underscoring his practical, hands-on approach to his responsibilities.
