Description
Arsene Lupin III is the world-renowned gentleman thief and the protagonist of his namesake series. He is introduced as the grandson of the famous literary character Arsène Lupin, a connection that defines his legacy and drives his ambition to be the world's greatest thief. His ethnic background is often specified as being of mixed French and Japanese heritage. Physically, he is depicted as a slender man, standing 179 cm tall, with black hair styled with a distinctive widow's peak and long sideburns extending from his ears to nearly his chin. His wardrobe is notably fashionable, typically consisting of a brightly colored blazer worn unbuttoned, a dress shirt and tie, cropped trousers, and dress boots. The color of his jacket is a signature element, often used to represent different eras of his story, shifting from green in his earliest adventures to red, pink, blue, light blue, and teal in subsequent series.

Lupin's personality is famously dual-layered, with a significant divergence between his original manga portrayal and the more familiar anime version. In the original manga, Lupin is depicted as a crude, remorseless, and violent individual, a lecherous criminal mastermind who has no qualms about murder or forcing himself on women. However, the anime adaptation drastically altered his character to make him more appealing, transforming him into a chivalrous and fun-loving goofball. In this more common interpretation, while he remains a self-proclaimed Casanova, his actual success with women is erratic and often fails. Despite his profession, he dislikes killing and strictly adheres to a personal code, preferring non-lethal methods. He often takes it upon himself and his gang to stop more violent criminals, leaving them for Inspector Zenigata to arrest, and has a chivalrous streak that compels him to help those less fortunate.

His primary motivation is not the treasure itself but the thrill of the heist. Lupin relishes the challenge of planning and executing an impossible theft, and he is rarely upset when he loses or gives away the prize afterwards, having proven his skills were superior. When not engaged in a caper, he enjoys a life of leisure that includes dating, gambling, playing pool, driving race cars, and enjoying fine cuisine and cigarettes. Within the story, Lupin serves as the mastermind and leader of his gang, acting as the catalyst for their adventures. His role is to devise the schemes, execute the most daring parts of the heist, and ultimately be the one who declares success.

His relationships are central to the series. His partnership with Daisuke Jigen is his strongest and most loyal friendship, with Jigen acting as his steadfast partner-in-crime and expert marksman. His relationship with Fujiko Mine is far more complicated; Lupin is deeply infatuated with her, but she frequently betrays him for personal gain, creating a dynamic the series creator compared to a man and woman simply "having fun with each other" rather than being true lovers. His bond with Goemon Ishikawa XIII is one of respect, with the samurai occasionally threatening to kill Lupin but ultimately becoming a reliable ally. Perhaps his most unique relationship is with his nemesis, Inspector Koichi Zenigata of the ICPO. Lupin affectionately calls him "Pops," and despite their cat-and-mouse game, they share a deep mutual respect. Lupin considers Zenigata a worthy opponent and has even risked his life for revenge when the inspector was nearly killed, a loyalty that Zenigata reciprocates by vowing never to kill Lupin.

Lupin possesses an extraordinary array of abilities. He is a master of disguise, capable of flawlessly impersonating any man or woman after minimal observation, with his favorite disguise being that of Zenigata himself. He is a formidable escape artist, able to crack any safe and free himself from seemingly any restraint. His intellect is brilliant, allowing him to extemporize and re-evaluate plans on the fly, and he possesses encyclopedic knowledge of various sciences and history. He is an excellent marksman, favoring a Walther P38 pistol, and a skilled driver and pilot. He is also incredibly agile and dexterous, often employing gimmicks like explosive cigarettes or spring-loaded gadgets to befuddle his opponents. Underneath his childish and reckless facade lies a tactical genius who uses his demeanor to cause opponents to underestimate him.
