Description
Kurita Ryoukan is a second-year student at Deimon High School and one of the founding members of the school’s American football team, the Deimon Devil Bats. He lines up primarily as the center and also plays defensive tackle and long snapper, wearing the number 77 jersey. Physically, he stands at 195 centimeters and weighs 145 kilograms, giving him a round, imposing frame and a distinctive chestnut-shaped head. His size and power are products of a childhood spent in a temple under a father who headed a Buddhist sect and strongly believed that large meals built strength.

Kurita’s personality is overwhelmingly gentle, kind-hearted, and optimistic. Among the Devil Bats, he is often described as the only player whose heart is even larger than his body. He is approachable, warm, and treats new teammates with encouragement rather than pressure. This soft nature occasionally makes him seem clumsy off the field; he has been known to accidentally dent a small truck by hugging it and can be somewhat oblivious to secrets around him. However, during games a fiercer side emerges, especially in critical moments when his face tightens, his eyes grow intense, and his raw power surges beyond its usual limits. This transformation does not erase his kindness—it channels it into an unyielding protective force.

His primary motivation stems from an early love of American football and a singular dream of playing in the Christmas Bowl, the national high school championship. That dream led him to found the Deimon Devil Bats together with Yoichi Hiruma and Musashi (Gen Takekura), two friends from middle school, after being pushed out of a more prestigious program when another prodigy, Kongo Agon, was chosen for a special scholarship. Instead of chasing an easier path, Kurita chose Deimon High to build a team from nothing, driven by loyalty to Hiruma and a belief that they could achieve the Christmas Bowl together.

Within the story, Kurita fills the dual role of a tactical linchpin and an emotional center. On the field he is the anchor of both the offensive and defensive lines, using his enormous strength to shield the quarterback, open gaps for ball carriers, and resist even the most relentless opposing tackles. Off the field he serves as a moral compass and a unifying figure who calms conflicts—often literally by flattening everyone in a scuffle—and who constantly reminds his teammates that success comes through teamwork and perseverance. His leadership among the linemen grows as the series progresses, and he becomes a reliable senior who can rally the team when morale dips.

His closest relationship is with Yoichi Hiruma, the cunning and ruthless quarterback. Despite their opposite personalities—Hiruma is calculating and intimidating while Kurita is tender and straightforward—the two share a bond of deep mutual trust forged since middle school. Hiruma often steadies Kurita’s nerves, and Kurita in turn provides the physical and emotional support that makes Hiruma’s risky strategies possible. With Musashi, the team’s kicker, Kurita shares the grief of temporary separation when Musashi leaves the team, and the joy of reunion that reignites the trio’s original dream. Kurita also quickly befriends the protagonist Sena Kobayakawa, becoming Sena’s second friend at Deimon and a steadfast supporter who recognizes Sena’s hidden speed and encourages his growth as Eyeshield 21. Additionally, he acts as a mentor to the diminutive but strong Komusubi Daikichi, who idolizes Kurita, follows him in early-morning training sessions, and communicates in a quiet manner that few outside the line understand. Kurita’s most significant rivalry is with Gaou Rikiya of the Hakushu Dinosaurs, a physically stronger and more violent lineman. Their confrontations push Kurita to draw on experience, technique, and lower-body power, ultimately proving that skill and heart can overcome sheer brute force.

Kurita’s development across the series is rooted in learning to convert his gentle nature into athletic resolve. Initially he is timid when facing superior opponents, but through repeated challenges and the trust of his teammates he gains confidence in his own strength. The return of Musashi triggers a more combative mindset that complements his natural warmth, enabling him to fight with controlled ferocity when protecting his team. By the tournament arc he is capable of standing toe-to-toe with the country’s most fearsome linemen, not just as a physically dominant blocker but as a player whose will inspires the entire line.

His notable abilities begin with raw power: a 160-kilogram bench press and an immovable presence that can hold back multiple defenders. Though his 40-yard dash time of 6.5 seconds makes him the slowest member of the team, he compensates with surprising agility for his size, refined technique, and an exceptional understanding of leverage. His blocking gives the quarterback precious seconds to read the field, and his forceful surges open up running lanes. When his competitive fire is lit, he enters an intensified state where his strength escalates further, and he has used this to defeat even the top-ranked Gaou by combining lower-body drive with veteran savvy. Kurita’s real hallmark, however, is how his physical gifts are always expressed in service of others—blocking, protecting, and creating opportunities—making him the gentle heavy tank of the Deimon Devil Bats.
