Description
Henry Marker is the father of the main character, Karin, and a vampire who presents a unique blend of traditional vampire traits and surprisingly human behavior. He was born into a vampire lineage as the son of James and Elda Marker. After marrying Calera, the couple moved to Japan, where they chose to keep the English spelling of their surname, while their children later adopted the Japanese romaji spelling, Maaka.
In terms of personality, Henry is often portrayed as a bumbling and somewhat childish figure, known to cry over minor issues. Despite possessing a fearsome and imposing vampire appearance, he frequently acts in a silly manner that belies his monstrous heritage. He is generally submissive and henpecked by his wife, Calera, who often pushes him around and dominates family matters. However, beneath this gentle and often ridiculous exterior, he possesses a fierce side that he rarely shows the world. This protective instinct emerges only when his family, particularly his children, are in genuine danger.
Henry’s primary motivation is the safety and happiness of his family, especially his eldest daughter, Karin. Despite her being a teenager, he continues to view her as extremely young and vulnerable. His deep paternal love is most famously demonstrated when Karin suffered her first nosebleed at a human school. Fearing that hospital workers would discover she was a vampire during an examination, Henry braved direct sunlight to rescue her. As a vampire, sunlight is lethal to him, and he suffered severe burns in the process, yet he did not hesitate to protect her secret and well-being. He also experiences normal paternal jealousy and anxiety when the possibility of a romantic relationship between Karin and the human Kenta Usui arises, struggling with the implications of his daughter falling in love with a human.
Within the family structure, Henry serves as a supporting figure. While Calera is the stern, dominant matriarch who often expresses shame over Karin’s anomalies, Henry offers a softer, more emotional counterbalance, openly showing his love and concern for his children. His role in the story often involves reacting to the chaos caused by Karin’s unique blood condition, particularly her interactions with Kenta, and providing moments of both comic relief and genuine paternal gravity. A notable character trait shared by the Marker family is their specific blood preference; each vampire is drawn to a particular human emotion. Henry's affinity is for humans who exhibit an overbearing sense of pride.
Like most vampires in his world, Henry possesses a bat as a familiar. This creature, which remains unnamed, has glowing red eyes and acts as a companion and helper. While he can be a powerful vampire, his character development is less about gaining new abilities and more about the occasional emergence of his serious, fierce nature in defense of those he loves, contrasting sharply with his typical passive and goofy demeanor. As a first-generation vampire born in Japan, he occupies an interesting position between the old-world vampire traditions of his parents and the more modern, integrated lives of his children.
