TV-Series
Description
Kenta Usui is a main character and the human love interest of Karin Maaka. He is introduced as a new transfer student at Karin's high school and becomes the first human to discover her secret identity as a vampire.

Kenta lives in a small one-room apartment with his mother, Fumio Usui, and the family struggles financially. Because they have very little money, Kenta often cannot afford three meals a day and frequently goes hungry, especially in the middle of the day. To support himself and his mother, he works as many part-time hours as he can, including a job as a waiter at the Julian Restaurant where Karin also works. Despite his difficult circumstances, he maintains a strong work ethic and dreams of one day becoming a model citizen with a good job and a family of his own.

Kenta's personality is shaped significantly by his childhood. His maternal grandmother ignored him due to the circumstances of his birth, which taught him to live a life free from prejudice and judgment of others. This open-minded nature allows him to sympathize with Karin's unusual condition when he learns the truth about her. However, he also struggles with periods of unhappiness and low self-esteem, a trait that is directly connected to Karin's vampire abilities. His appearance can be intimidating to others, as some people bluntly describe his eyes as creepy, which makes Kenta feel annoyed or downcast.

Within the story, Kenta's role is primarily as Karin's closest ally and eventual romantic partner. At the suggestion of Karin's younger sister, Anju, the Maaka family decides to make Kenta an ally rather than erasing his memory, as they originally planned. He is trusted to help care for Karin during daylight hours, when her vampire family cannot be as active. His personal unhappiness triggers Karin's unique condition, which causes her to produce excessive amounts of blood, but his growing happiness and connection to her also help stabilize her abilities. Realizing that Karin goes out of her way to make him bento lunches, he becomes deeply grateful and protective of her.

Kenta's key relationships include his bond with Karin, which evolves from suspicion and concern to deep affection and love. He offers his own neck to Karin so she can bite him whenever she needs to, preventing her from having painful nosebleeds. Karin bites him twice over the course of the series, with the second bite occurring after their first kiss. He also has a significant relationship with his mother, Fumio, whom he works hard to support. Later in the story, when Karin is kidnapped, Kenta actively aids the Maaka family in tracking her down. During this rescue mission, which takes place near his hometown, Karin encourages him to visit his estranged and ill grandmother. He does so, realizing he does not want to lose the chance to reconcile with her, and finds that his grandmother had never abandoned his old belongings, bringing him warmth and closure.

Throughout the series, Kenta undergoes notable development. He transitions from a lonely, hardworking student burdened by family rejection and poverty to a confident young man capable of deep love and commitment. After Karin's family is forced to modify her memories to protect her, Kenta's own memories remain intact and cannot be erased. He makes a solemn promise to keep her vampire heritage a secret from her and to dedicate himself to making her happy. In the end, Kenta and Karin marry and have a daughter named Kanon, who is the reincarnated spirit of the first Psyche, Sophia Pistis.

As a human, Kenta does not possess supernatural abilities. His most notable trait is his resilience and his capacity for empathy, which ultimately makes him immune to the memory-erasing powers of vampires, a quality that proves essential to the story's resolution.
