Description
Kenta Usui is a main character and the human love interest of Karin Maaka. He is introduced as a new transfer student at Karin's high school and becomes the first human to discover her secret identity as a vampire.
Kenta lives in a small one-room apartment with his mother, Fumio Usui, and the family struggles financially. Because they have very little money, Kenta often cannot afford three meals a day and frequently goes hungry, especially in the middle of the day. To support himself and his mother, he works as many part-time hours as he can, including a job as a waiter at the Julian Restaurant where Karin also works. Despite his difficult circumstances, he maintains a strong work ethic and dreams of one day becoming a model citizen with a good job and a family of his own.
Kenta's personality is shaped significantly by his childhood. His maternal grandmother ignored him due to the circumstances of his birth, which taught him to live a life free from prejudice and judgment of others. This open-minded nature allows him to sympathize with Karin's unusual condition when he learns the truth about her.
