Description
Carrera Maaka is the matriarch of the Maaka vampire family and the mother of the protagonist, Karin. Her role in the household is that of the primary authority figure, exerting a powerful and often forceful influence over her husband Henry and their children. Carrera is a pure-blooded vampire with a strong, dominant personality, and she is not hesitant to assert her will physically, frequently using her high-heeled shoe or a green house slipper to correct the behavior of her family members, especially her husband.

Despite her often harsh and impulsive exterior, Carrera’s motivations are deeply rooted in her concern for her family's wellbeing. This is most evident in her relationship with her eldest daughter, Karin. Unlike a typical vampire who requires blood from others, Karin’s body overproduces blood, a peculiar condition that Carrera finds shameful and worrying. She often appears more critical of Karin than her husband does and seems to favor her younger daughter, Anju, who exhibits the traits of a normal vampire. However, this severity masks a genuine fear for Karin's health. Carrera’s concern runs so deep that she travels to her home country specifically to research the cause of Karin’s unique condition and find a potential cure, driven by the fear that it might eventually kill her daughter. Her preference for Anju is also tied to the fact that Anju represents a normal, healthy vampire future, whereas Karin’s anomalous nature is a source of constant anxiety.

Carrera’s key relationships are marked by strong tensions. Her marriage to Henry began not out of love but through an arrangement orchestrated by Henry’s father, James. Carrera had been infatuated with James, who manipulated the situation to unite the two families by having Henry and Carrera wed. Both were furious upon discovering the deception, but over time, their relationship evolved into a fun and happy marriage, though Carrera definitively remains the one in control. She provides Henry with a specific type of blood, preferring that of liars, which she drinks from a wine glass. Her most antagonistic relationship is with her mother-in-law, Elda. The two have a long history of antipathy, and at the beginning of the series, Carrera has even sealed Elda inside her coffin in the family basement. When Elda escapes, Carrera frequently and openly offers to get rid of her, highlighting their mutual disdain.

Information regarding Carrera’s background reveals that she comes from a prestigious vampire lineage, being the daughter of Daniel and Cecilia. As a young vampire, she was drawn to powerful older men, specifically James, a factor that contributed to her initial displeasure at being betrothed to his son, whom she considered weak. Her role within the story’s narrative is largely as an obstacle and a source of tension within the Maaka household, but also as a key figure in driving the plot forward, particularly when she leaves to seek answers about Karin’s condition. Her development throughout the series is subtle, as her abrasive personality softens slightly when confronted with the serious dangers her daughter faces, revealing a mother willing to go to great lengths to protect her child, even if she seldom expresses it tenderly. Her notable abilities include the physical strength and agility common to her kind, and a unique preference for the blood of liars, which she is able to detect.
