Description
Joseph Jobson is the central protagonist of the anime, a figure defined by profound tragedy and unwavering resolve who operates as a hunter of Demoniacs. His German nationality and his role as a primary target for the Xenogenesis Assault Team, or XAT, stem from a pivotal incident where his actions resulted in the paralysis of famous motorcycle racer Gerd Frentzen, earning Joseph the codename Blue due to his transformed body's color.

Joseph's origins are steeped in sorrow. Born as an Outsider, he was adopted by a church after his mother died of exposure in the countryside. He spent his childhood in a close-knit religious community, helping an old priest care for other orphans and those in need, and learning to whittle statues of the Virgin Mary from him. This peaceful existence was shattered when a nearby river flooded, turning the church into a crowded shelter for the homeless and wounded. The resulting strain drove the priest, Joseph's paternal figure, to death from exhaustion.

In the aftermath, Joseph met Magwald Xargin, a charismatic researcher distributing aid to the impoverished. Through Xargin, Joseph discovered he had an elder sister, Alexandra Sasha Jobson, a brilliant scientist. For a time, all three shared a deep desire to help others, even resorting to smuggling medication from their university, which was led by a man named Victor Statchus. This hope was brutally extinguished when Sasha was beaten to death by xenophobic citizens. Consumed by despair, Xargin rebelled against Victor. When Joseph tried to stop his former friend, Xargin responded by infecting the teenager with nanomachine-infested blood, transforming him into an Amalgam. Following this, Victor Statchus gave Joseph the GARM motorcycle, which houses an artificial intelligence named Elea, and entrusted him with the mission of tracking down Xargin.

Personality-wise, Joseph is a solitary and mysterious figure, a demeanor forged by years of persecution and loss. He is often seen whittling, a practice rooted in his childhood, or speaking with Elea, the AI who serves as his sole companion and confidante. Despite his grim exterior and the fearsome reputation that leads organizations like XAT to view him as an enemy, Joseph never attacks humans, focusing his efforts solely on eradicating Amalgams. This commitment stems from a deep-seated kindness and a belief, instilled by the priest who raised him, that life still holds meaning even in the darkest hours. This profound sense of self-control is his most defining trait. It allows him to retain his sanity as a Demoniac, but it comes at a significant cost; his restraint makes him noticeably weaker than more powerful and unhinged individuals like Xargin or Beatrice. For most of the story, he is a hunted figure, pursued both by the monsters he fights and the human authorities who misunderstand him.

His key relationships deeply influence his path. His bond with Xargin is the series' core, a tragic friendship that transforms into a vengeful mission. His love for his sister Sasha, who is later revived with white hair and a cybernetic implant, becomes a source of both hope and peril. A significant connection forms with Malek, a young boy and the adopted brother of XAT officer Amanda Werner. Recognizing their shared experiences of bullying and social isolation, Joseph befriends Malek and even takes a bullet meant for him, demonstrating his protective nature.

Throughout the narrative, Joseph's role evolves from a lone operative into a key player in the larger conflict. After being captured by XAT, Elea frees him, and he eventually joins the secretive Zwölf organization. There, he is reunited with the revived Sasha and agrees to undergo the Pale Horse physical enhancement program. This experimental procedure is designed to grant him greater strength by sacrificing the self-control that defined him. The experiment is a success, transforming him into a berserker-like Blassreiter with red outlines instead of his usual blue. However, this enhanced state is a double-edged sword. Haunted by illusions, he loses the ability to distinguish friend from foe, mercilessly attacking Sasha and Amanda until he is finally brought to his senses by another character named Snow. Even with this newfound power, Joseph struggles against his former friend, with Xargin dismissing his enhanced state as false power.

In combat, Joseph demonstrates several notable abilities. In his Demoniac form, he can manifest an energy whip that can be solidified into a narrow-bladed sword. He possesses the unique ability to fuse with his GARM motorcycle, integrating the machine into his transformed state. His techniques include Light Step, which enables high-speed movement that appears as teleportation to the untrained eye, and Demoniac Shield, an energy barrier created by tracing a hexagon with his blade. In his berserker state, his strength, speed, and ferocity increase dramatically at the cost of his sanity.
