Description
Jack Bezarius is a pivotal character from the anime and manga Pandora Hearts, whose true nature stands in stark contrast to the heroic legend that surrounds him. He is physically characterized by his golden-blonde hair, which he wears in a long three-strand braid, and his vivid emerald-green eyes. Standing at 180 centimeters tall, he possesses a handsome and calm appearance that belies the turmoil within. He was born on January 19th as the third son of the Vessalius family, a position of low status as he was a child from a concubine, leading to a neglected and poverty-stricken childhood spent in the countryside with his mother.

On the surface, Jack exhibits a cheerful, free-spirited, and sociable personality, often enjoying the company of women and activities like climbing trees. He is a talented artisan, skilled in singing, dancing, playing the piano, and particularly in crafting intricate music boxes, a profession he proudly claimed for himself. However, this bright exterior conceals a deeply complex and profoundly disturbed individual. Another character, Oswald Baskerville, aptly describes Jack as being like "still water"—a surface so clear and placid that it reflects only the viewer, making it impossible to perceive the depths or true essence of the person beneath. Jack himself disliked this description, as it suggested that his hidden nature had been seen through.

Jack's entire existence and motivation revolve around a single, obsessive fixation: a woman named Lacie Baskerville. Before meeting her, he was a drifter with no will to live, sleeping on the streets. Lacie found him during a snowy day and, by showing him kindness and giving him a reason to live, became his entire world. After she was cast into the Abyss—a timeless prison-like dimension—by her own family, Jack's desire to be with her became catastrophically twisted. He concluded that the only way to reunite with her was to plunge the entire world into the Abyss as a gift for her. This goal makes him the true instigator of the devastating Sablier Tragedy, an event for which he was wrongly celebrated as a hero who stopped the Baskerville family.

His key relationships are defined by this obsession. Jack became a close friend of Lacie's brother, Glen Baskerville (Oswald), largely as a means to remain near her. Despite their genuine friendship, Jack's love for Lacie ultimately superseded all else, leading him to murder Oswald, his own beloved friend, during the Sablier Tragedy to further his plan. He also formed a connection with the Intention of the Abyss, also named Alice, who resided within the Abyss. He exploited her affection for him, manipulating her into transforming her sister's cherished rabbit doll into the powerful Chain known as B-Rabbit, or the "Blood-Stained Black Rabbit," which became his own chain.

In the story's present timeline, Jack no longer has a physical body of his own. When the Sablier Tragedy occurred, his soul was shattered by a powerful shockwave and rejected by the Abyss itself, preventing him from reincarnating or dying a normal death. As a result, he exists as fragmented soul remnants residing within the body and mind of his distant descendant and look-alike, Oz Vessalius. From within Oz, Jack acts as a guide and mentor, encouraging him and providing information. However, he also possesses the ability to take control of Oz's body at will, using his descendant as a vessel to interact with the world and further his own lingering agenda. When in control, he can fully command the power of his Chain, B-Rabbit. His physical form is trapped in an abnormal 25-year cycle, repeatedly aging to 25 before regressing to infancy, a consequence of being an "anomaly" and a "living ghost" rejected by the natural laws of the world. Ultimately, after his machinations are finally thwarted, his fragile, fragmented soul is exhausted and fades into nothingness, bringing his long and tragic existence to an end.
