Description
Gilbert Nightray, also known by the code name Raven, is a central character with a complex past that spans over a century. He is a tall young man with black hair and distinctive golden eyes, often seen wearing an earring in his left ear and a black hat. Outwardly, he often presents a cool and somewhat stern demeanor, which contrasts sharply with his more vulnerable internal world.
His history is defined by two distinct lives. Originally, over one hundred years prior to the main storyline, he and his younger brother Vincent were taken in by Jack Vessalius and became servants to Oswald Baskerville, the Glen Baskerville of that era. Gilbert was destined to become the next vessel for Glen's soul. During the catastrophic event known as the Tragedy of Sablier, he was severely wounded and, along with his brother, fell into the Abyss, a mysterious prison-like dimension. He eventually returned to the present era but emerged with no memory of his past, found injured on the grounds of the Vessalius household. There, he was taken in and became the devoted servant and closest friend to the young master of the house, Oz Vessalius.
Gilbert’s personality is a study in contrasts. On one hand, he is fiercely loyal and protective, driven by a deep-seated need to be needed by his master. This devotion can appear obsessive, as his entire sense of purpose is often tied to serving and protecting the person he has sworn allegiance to. He is capable of great violence when he perceives a threat to his master. On the other hand, he is deeply insecure, prone to bouts of crying when drunk, and easily flustered, which makes him a frequent target for teasing by Oz and their ally, Xerxes Break. Despite his often serious expression, he possesses a gentle and caring nature, excelling at all manner of household chores, including cooking and cleaning. He has a well-known, almost comical, fear of cats. He is also a heavy smoker with multiple failed attempts to quit.
His motivations are intrinsically linked to his role as a servant. His core desire is to be useful and to protect his master, a drive that originates from his traumatic childhood protecting his younger brother Vincent. After losing his memories, this drive attached itself to Oz. However, after Oz is thrown into the Abyss on the day of his coming-of-age ceremony—an event during which Gilbert was controlled by a Chain and forced to attack Oz—Gilbert’s primary goal becomes the rescue of his master. To gain the power needed, he joins the organization Pandora and contracts with the powerful Chain known as Raven, a feat that required him to be adopted into the Nightray Dukedom, a family he personally despises. This decision he views as a betrayal of Oz, adding another layer to his complex sense of duty and guilt.
In the story, Gilbert serves as Oz’s steadfast guardian and right hand. As a member of Pandora, he operates under Break’s command, using his skills as a dual-wielding gunslinger. His most significant narrative role is tied to his lost memories and his identity as the former servant of Glen Baskerville. Recovering these memories is a major part of his character arc, forcing him to reconcile his past life and loyalties with his present ones. His unique position as the only person who can suppress the power of the Chain B-Rabbit inside Oz is also crucial, as it prevents Oz’s body from deteriorating under the strain.
His key relationships are fraught with complexity. His bond with Oz Vessalius is the most important one, a mix of genuine friendship and obsessive servitude. In contrast, his relationship with his younger brother, Vincent Nightray, is deeply troubled. Although they share a blood bond and a traumatic past, Gilbert feels a strong aversion to Vincent, largely due to his brother's actions and red eyes, which are considered an ill omen. Despite this, a deep, if painful, connection and a sense of responsibility toward him remain. He is loyal to his superior, Xerxes Break, despite often being exasperated by him. He also shares a bickering but cooperative dynamic with Alice, whom he often calls "stupid rabbit."
Gilbert undergoes significant development. Initially portrayed as a loyal but amnesiac servant, he is forced to confront the truth of his past. The recovery of his memories as a servant to Glen Baskerville threatens to overwrite his identity and loyalty to Oz, as he is compelled to obey his former master’s commands. In a critical act of defiance, he severs his own left arm to break the supernatural control Glen has over him. This moment represents the pinnacle of his development, as he chooses his own path and his bond with Oz over his preordained destiny, reaffirming his identity as Gilbert Nightray, the one who chooses to serve.
Gilbert possesses several notable abilities. He is highly proficient with dual pistols, a skill he trained for years to master. His primary supernatural ability comes from his contract with the Chain Raven. This contract allows him to summon and control Raven for combat and transport. More importantly, it grants him the power to seal away the destructive power of the B-Rabbit Chain within Oz, preventing its power from consuming him. As a Baskerville, he also possesses physical capabilities beyond those of a normal human, such as increased durability and the inability to be killed by ordinary weapons.
