Description
Giichi is the deputy leader of the Mugai-Ryu, a group of executioners assembled by the shogunate official Habaki Kagimura to eradicate the rogue Itto-Ryu sword school. He was the first member recruited and is widely considered the deadliest among them, ultimately killing approximately sixty members of the Itto-Ryu over the course of the conflict.

Giichi's motivations are rooted in a personal tragedy. Before becoming a swordsman, he was a poor shipwright who raised his sickly son, Tojiro, alone after his wife died. The constant cost of doctors and medicine drove him to crime, for which he was caught and sentenced to death. Habaki Kagimura offered him a chance to work off his sentence as a killer for the Mugai-Ryu, allowing him to use part of his earnings to pay for his son's medical treatment. This arrangement is the core of his loyalty to Habaki and his relentless dedication to his violent work.

In personality, Giichi is a quiet and stoic individual who almost never displays emotion. He prefers to work alone, leaving the public leadership of the group to his colleague, Hyakurin, while he quietly observes from the sidelines. Despite his phenomenal skill, he is cynical about his profession, viewing it as underhanded murder rather than honorable combat, though he does admit to an enjoyment of the hunt. He harbors a profound belief that people who seek great power or mastery must inevitably sacrifice the things they love most. Giichi also possesses a deep-seated, almost self-destructive need for purpose and obligation. When his son dies on the very same day that he finally earns his freedom from the shogunate, he is completely lost, having no idea how to function as a normal person without a mission. He descends into severe depression, attempting to drink himself to death in a remote camp for outcasts.

Giichi's central relationships define his arc. His bond with Hyakurin is the most significant, implying an unspoken romantic affection. When she is captured and tortured by vengeful Itto-Ryu members, he single-handedly tracks down and executes her captors, then tenderly cares for her during her recovery. After his freedom is secured, he attempts to use his entire payout to buy Hyakurin's freedom from Habaki. Later, when he is a broken drunk, Hyakurin finds him, and in a rare emotional outburst, he admits he believes his life is worthless. After learning she is pregnant from her assault, Giichi convinces her to keep the child and promises to raise it himself, leading to a quiet declaration of love from her. From that point, they are inseparable, with the implication they will attempt to build a normal life together. He holds a deep respect for Habaki Kagimura for giving him the means to provide for his son, and feels a lasting sense of obligation even after his service ends. In his interactions with the young heroine Rin, he is hesitantly helpful, respecting her dedication and even providing her with intelligence on her target's location while advising caution. His relationship with the immortal ronin Manji is initially combative, defined by frustration over Manji's cavalier attitude during their fights, though they later form a grudging alliance to rescue Rin from the Itto-Ryu.

Giichi's combat abilities are formidable, his greatest assets being his incredible speed, improvisational skill, and an inexorable determination that allows him to continue fighting despite grievous wounds. His primary weapon for most of the series is an unusual and distinctive tool called Kanetsura's Mito-No-Kami, meaning Guardian of the Three Paths, which resembles a circular, bladed handcuff attached to a long chain. This weapon allows him to attack from a distance, using the chain to ensnare or disarm enemies while the guillotine-like blade can sever limbs or heads. After this weapon is broken in a fight with Manji, Giichi adopts a new set of weapons: a pair of curved sickles connected by a chain, given to him by Manji. His prowess is such that it is suggested only he or Habaki himself would have a chance of killing the Itto-Ryu's master, Anotsu Kagehisa.
