Description
"Blade of the Immortal" is set in feudal Japan and centers on Manji, a skilled swordsman cursed with immortality after a dark ritual. Once a ruthless killer, Manji seeks redemption by vowing to kill one thousand evil men to atone for his past sins. His path crosses with Rin Asano, a young woman seeking vengeance against the Ittō-ryū, a group of rogue swordsmen responsible for the brutal murder of her parents. Rin’s determination and Manji’s quest for redemption intertwine as they form an uneasy alliance.

The Ittō-ryū, led by the enigmatic Anotsu Kagehisa, aims to dismantle the traditional sword schools and establish a new order, challenging the established martial hierarchy. Anotsu’s methods are brutal, and his vision attracts both loyal followers and dangerous adversaries. As Manji and Rin pursue their goals, they encounter a diverse cast of characters, including skilled warriors, morally ambiguous figures, and individuals with their own vendettas against the Ittō-ryū.

The narrative explores themes of revenge, morality, and the cost of immortality. Manji’s immortality, granted by bloodworms that heal his wounds, becomes both a blessing and a curse, as he endures physical and emotional suffering while confronting his past. Rin’s journey evolves from a single-minded pursuit of vengeance to a deeper understanding of the complexities of justice and the human cost of violence.

The series is marked by intense, visceral sword fights and a gritty portrayal of feudal Japan’s underworld. The characters’ motivations and relationships are layered, with alliances shifting as personal ambitions and moral dilemmas come into play. The story delves into the consequences of violence and the cyclical nature of revenge, presenting a world where redemption is neither simple nor guaranteed. Through its exploration of these themes and its intricate character dynamics, "Blade of the Immortal" offers a compelling and often brutal narrative set against the backdrop of a turbulent historical period.

4Act Four – Rin at Odds
Manji trains Rin in knife throwing and swordsmanship, but she fails to land a hit on him. He tells her she cannot last five seconds against Kagehisa Anotsu and advises her to run instead. That night, Rin wanders to a river and hears someone training with an axe. She watches a man cut leaves and wishes to become like him, then recognizes him as Anotsu. Anotsu detects her and sets down his weapon. Rin throws all her knives, but only one grazes his shoulder. She rushes to take his axe but cannot lift it. Anotsu retrieves the weapon and knocks her down with a throw. He realizes she is the Asano girl and asks why she wants to die so quickly rather than escape and wait for another chance. Anotsu explains that their grandfathers competed for mastery of Muten Ichi-ryu. Rin’s grandfather received the title despite Anotsu’s grandfather being more skilled, so Anotsu killed Rin’s father to give his own grandfather peace. He releases her, stating her flawed fighting style no longer belongs to Muten Ichi-ryu and aligns closer to the Itto-ryu. A flashback shows young Anotsu watching a woman named Makie kill 52 wild dogs after his grandfather left her tied to a tree. In another flashback, Anotsu’s grandfather Saburo asks an old ally named Abayama to help kill ten-year-old Anotsu. Abayama instead kills Saburo and tells Anotsu he did so to protect the Itto-ryu, and Anotsu accepts the new leadership. Rin remains alive but understands she must close the gap in skill before confronting Anotsu again.

The shogunate government slaughters the Itto-ryu's allies, leaving Kagehisa with only a handful of retainers. Kagehisa gathers the survivors in secret and swears to take revenge. Giichi, acting on behalf of the Mugai-ryu, confronts Manji and demands he join their organization. Manji refuses, and the two engage in a duel. Manji destroys Giichi's chain-blade weapon, ending the fight. Giichi then extends an invitation for Manji to meet Mugai-ryu leader Kagimura Habaki. Manji accepts the offer, hoping to get close enough to kill Kagimura. Kagimura reveals his knowledge of Manji's past slaughter of one hundred men, including nine of his own soldiers. Rather than recruiting Manji, Kagimura expresses a desire to dissect him and learn the secret of his immortality. Manji falls into an ambush and is shackled in chains inside a sterile examination room. Rin, left alone, practices her swordsmanship and manages to slice six sticks in mid-air with a single stroke. Hyakurin dyes her hair back to black, symbolizing her departure from her criminal past, and implies that Shinriji has died. In a post-credits scene, several of Kagehisa's surviving followers take shelter in the same hovel where Rin waits for Manji, setting up a direct confrontation.
