Description
Kagehisa Anotsu is the young leader of the Itto-ryu, a renegade sword school that rejects traditional forms and samurai honor codes in favor of practical, lethal efficiency. He is a slender young man with narrow, slit-like eyes, who typically wears his hair in a low ponytail. At twenty-two years old, he possesses prodigious skill with a blade and is considered the equal of the immortal swordsman Manji in combat ability.

His background is defined by a traumatic childhood under the care of his grandfather, Saburo Anotsu. Saburo was once a student of the Mutenichi-ryu dojo but was cast out for using a foreign sword during a bandit attack, an act considered to demonstrate poor style and a lack of honor. Following his expulsion, Saburo became bitter and abusive, subjecting Kagehisa to harsh and relentless training. This upbringing left Kagehisa deeply disillusioned with concepts like bushido, which he saw as hypocritical and worthless, as it prioritized form and honor over victory and survival.

Personality-wise, Anotsu is typically calm, pragmatic, and emotionally cold, maintaining his composure even in difficult situations. He is shrewd and calculating, often keeping the bigger picture in sight and scheming to achieve his goals. Despite his composed exterior, he can be surprisingly arrogant and cocky, and he displays a sarcastic wit, especially when speaking with his nemesis, Rin Asano. He shows a different, more genuine side around his cousin, Makie Otono-Tachibana, where he allows his real feelings to show. He also holds a specific moral standard for his Itto-ryu, insisting on one-on-one combat and forbidding attacks on unarmed people.

Anotsu's primary motivation is to reform the Way of the Sword in Japan. He believes the samurai class has become weak and degenerate during the peaceful Tokugawa era, and he intends to revitalize it through the Itto-ryu, a school dedicated solely to the test of superior lethality. His quest is also deeply personal, driven by a need to avenge the disgrace of his grandfather and prove that his grandfather's pragmatic way was superior to the traditional schools that rejected him. To this end, he leads his school on a campaign of conquest, absorbing or destroying other dojos, most notably the Mutenichi-ryu, which is the dojo of Rin Asano's family.

In the story, Anotsu serves as the primary antagonist, as his actions directly set the plot in motion. He personally ordered the attack that resulted in the death of Rin Asano's father and the rape and murder of her mother, sparking her quest for vengeance. His role evolves from a seemingly inhuman villain to a more complex revolutionary figure, as the narrative explores his own traumas and principles. He seeks political power, aiming to make the Itto-ryu the official sword school of the shogunate, though this ambition ultimately leads to him being betrayed and hunted by the government.

Key relationships define much of his development. His relationship with his abusive grandfather is one of contempt and obligation, hating the man while still feeling indebted to carry on his legacy. Makie Otono-Tachibana is his cousin and childhood love, and he holds her in awe as the most powerful fighter in the Itto-ryu, a level of skill he admits he can never reach. His relationship with Rin Asano is complex; although she seeks to kill him, he allows her to live and even follow him, and they develop a grudging understanding after traveling together and saving each other's lives. Finally, he respects Manji as his combat equal, and their repeated clashes end with Manji defeating him but sparing his life.

Throughout the series, Anotsu experiences significant development. He begins as a cold, ambitious conqueror but grows more introspective, eventually realizing the futility of his violent dream in a peaceful age. After the Itto-ryu is destroyed and he loses nearly everything, his final battle with Manji costs him an arm. Though Manji spares him, Rin ultimately kills him to prevent him from passing his dream of violence on to the next generation. In his final moments, he acknowledges his own foolishness, leaving a will that hopes someone will remember the foolish people who rampaged for the prosperity of nothingness.

Anotsu is a formidable fighter whose notable abilities are centered on exceptional swordsmanship and physical prowess. He wields a unique primary weapon, a heavy Nepalese-style iron axe named Kabutsuchi, which is so heavy that most men can barely lift it. He also carries a sword of the same name, though he uses it rarely. His fighting style is brutally efficient, leveraging the immense weight of his axe to shatter swords and crush skulls rather than relying on the delicate cutting of a traditional katana. His speed, strength, and endurance are at peak human levels, allowing him to cut through steel and fight against numerous opponents.
