Description
Makie Otono-Tachibana is a master swordswoman from the manga and anime Blade of the Immortal. Born into a samurai family, she inherited the clan's formidable natural talent for swordsmanship. This talent led to a family tragedy when she defeated her older brother in combat, causing him to commit seppuku. Her father subsequently disowned both Makie and her mother, casting them out of the family. Her mother then fell into a life of prostitution, and Makie initially took up the sword to avenge her mother's disgrace. However, she was unable to fully commit to the path of a killer. When Anotsu Kagehisa purchased her freedom from a brothel, she chose to become a geisha rather than a prostitute or a dedicated swordfighter.

Makie's personality is defined by a deep internal conflict. She is a gentle and sensitive person who struggles with the act of killing, often hesitating or losing her focus in battle when her concentration is broken. Despite this, she is deeply loyal and protective, particularly toward Anotsu, with whom she is in love. Her motivations are driven by her devotion to Anotsu and her struggle to reconcile her violent capabilities with her desire for a peaceful existence. After her father's humiliating death, she attempted to destroy her own combat abilities by binding her hand, seeking to sabotage the skill that had brought her so much pain.

Her role in the story is that of a tragic warrior and a key figure aligned with Anotsu and the Itto-ryu. She is considered one of the most skilled fighters in the series, with Anotsu himself stating that she is the only one who can beat him. She first appears when she defeats Manji, the immortal protagonist, but spares his life, reflecting her inner turmoil. Later, in the Last Blood arc, she reappears after following a weakened Anotsu, destroying his pursuers and ultimately leaving with him and Magatsu. She serves as a protector and a source of emotional depth, highlighting the cost of violence and the difficulty of personal choice.

Her key relationships center on Anotsu, to whom she is unconditionally devoted, and her family, whose rejection shapes her character. Manji serves as a rival and a foil, emphasizing her struggle between violence and non-violence. She also has a distant familial connection to Anotsu, as she is his sixth cousin.

Her notable abilities include exceptional swordsmanship, agility, and precision. She is recognized as Anotsu's equal in combat, a claim few others can make. Her signature weapon is a double-bladed three-section staff named Haru-no-Okina, which she conceals inside a hollowed-out shamisen, an instrument associated with geisha culture. This allows her to appear unarmed before engaging in fluid and dynamic fighting. A significant weakness is her psychological limitation with killing, which can impair her effectiveness in battle. She also suffers from a lung condition, a disease that killed her father, which further weakens her body over time.
