Description
Marielle is a minor supporting character in the anime Pumpkin Scissors. She is a young teenage girl who lives with her father in the underground water distribution channels beneath the Imperial city. Her father is a drug addict, and he refuses to leave the sewers along with other former military soldiers who also dwell there because he has lost all hope for the future. Marielle cares for her father despite his condition and goes to great lengths to support him, including cutting and selling her own hair to obtain money for his drugs. When she is harassed by guards from the Mion Waterworks, the Pumpkin Scissors unit intervenes, and one of its members, Oreldo, steps in to help. Oreldo later devises a crude plan to provoke Marielle's father and the other soldiers by pretending to have bought her for a strip show, which results in Oreldo and another character, Marchis, receiving a severe beating. In the end, Marielle and her father are able to leave the sewers and move to a state farm where they can work. Her story highlights the harsh realities of post-war poverty and the sacrifices a child can make for a parent, though she herself displays no special combat or supernatural abilities. Her role in the narrative is to illustrate the social decay and the kinds of individuals the Pumpkin Scissors aim to assist.
