Description
Jasmine is one of the main characters in the anime Deltora Quest. She is introduced as a wild girl of approximately sixteen years of age who lives a solitary life in the dangerous Forests of Silence. Her parents were taken by Grey Guards when she was seven years old, forcing her to survive on her own. Since that time, her only companions have been a black bird named Kree and a small furry creature called Filli, whom she considers family. Jasmine has long dark hair and emerald green eyes, and her skin is often sun-browned from her life spent almost entirely outdoors.
Jasmine possesses several notable abilities that stem from her upbringing. She is highly acrobatic and can leap from tree to tree with ease. She also learned from her parents how to create healing mixtures and creams, a skill she uses to tend to injuries. Her most remarkable talent is her ability to understand and communicate with trees and many animals. Kree often serves as her scout, relaying information about distant dangers. She wields a single-edged dagger with a crystal-inlaid hilt, a weapon that originally belonged to her father.
In terms of personality, Jasmine is fiercely independent, stubborn, and often distrustful of strangers. Her years of isolation have made her hot-headed and lacking in social tact, which frequently leads to arguments with her companions, particularly Lief. She is extremely protective of Kree and Filli and is quick to act against any threat to them or to others she considers innocent. Despite her harsh exterior, she demonstrates a strong sense of loyalty once her trust is earned. Her world view is pragmatic and shaped by the harsh realities of survival, which often puts her at odds with Lief's more idealistic and justice-driven nature.
Jasmine's primary motivation at the story's start is her desire to see the downfall of the Shadow Lord, who is responsible for the destruction of her family. She meets the protagonists Lief and Barda during their quest to retrieve the seven gems of the Belt of Deltora. After a vision of her deceased mother, Anna, appears to her and encourages her to leave the forest, Jasmine agrees to join the quest permanently. She becomes a crucial member of the group, using her tracking skills, knowledge of the wilderness, and combat abilities to help navigate perils and overcome the guardians of the gems. As the series progresses, Jasmine's role grows from a reluctant ally into a committed hero who accompanies Lief and Barda on subsequent adventures, including the journey to the Shadowlands to rescue enslaved Deltorans and the search for the Four Sisters.
Her key relationships evolve significantly over the course of the story. Her relationship with Lief begins with mutual frustration due to their differing upbringings, but it deepens into strong friendship, mutual reliance, and eventually romantic love. By the end of the series, the two marry, and Jasmine becomes queen consort of Deltora. Barda becomes a father figure to her, filling the void left by her own absent parent. One of the most significant developments involves her father, Jarred, who is revealed to be the scarred resistance leader known as Doom. Jasmine initially distrusts him, unaware of their connection, but they eventually have a tearful reunion and reconcile, bonding over their shared stubbornness and objective thinking. Throughout her journey, Jasmine undergoes considerable development, transforming from a solitary, feral girl who trusts no one outside the forest into a loyal friend, a dedicated warrior for Deltora, and a queen who chooses to stay and help rebuild a kingdom rather than return to her isolated life.
