Description
Kouichi Aizawa is a character from Nabari no Ou. He presents as a fourteen-year-old middle school student and classmate of the protagonist Miharu Rokujou, yet his true identity is far older and more intricate. Originally an owl, Kouichi was transformed and granted immortality during the Edo period when a previous holder of the Shinra Banshou secret art experimented with implanting its wisdom into animals. He and another survivor, Shijima Kurookano, were the only successful subjects, gaining eternal life and taking on a mission to observe the end of the hidden ninja world. As a descendant of Fuuma ninja and a native of Banten Village, he studies nindō under Tobari Kumohira and serves as one of Miharu’s protectors.
On the surface, Kouichi exudes a warm, energetic, and friendly demeanor. He is often smiling and gets along easily with those around him, showing remarkable tolerance for Miharu’s apathetic nature. When ninja duties call, however, he becomes serious, focused, and unyielding, driven by a rigid personal code: someone who cannot protect the people close to them is no different from a murderer. His immortality has bred a deep fascination with death, not from morbid curiosity but because he is forever denied the experience. He longs for an end he cannot reach, and his underlying drive is to have the Shinra Banshou release him from immortality so that no being like himself—what he calls a monster—is ever created again.
Within the story, Kouichi is an essential ally and guardian. As one of only three Banten ninja alongside Miharu and Kumohira, he actively fights to shield Miharu from the Grey Wolves and other factions vying for the Shinra Banshou. His centuries of life have endowed him with high intelligence and extensive knowledge of ninjutsu, forbidden techniques, and the inner workings of Nabari. In combat he employs a Fukushima shinobi-style taught in the Banten region, with a specialty in manipulating the five elements. He also has some ability in teleportation, though its range is limited compared to that of the Fuuma clan. Additionally, he is skilled in Japanese dancing, which may complement his martial agility.
Key relationships shape his role. With Miharu, he is a steady, often more relaxed protector who balances Kumohira’s overbearing nature, though his patience is not without limits. He shares a profound bond with Shijima Kurookano, the other immortal survivor, and together they are referred to as the Hakutaku. His loyalty to Banten and to the memory of those who suffered from past experiments grounds his mission. He also confesses romantic feelings to the samurai Raimei Shimizu, though an answer is left pending, adding a layer of personal vulnerability.
In terms of development, the anime adaptation shows Kouichi choosing to continue living as an ordinary fourteen-year-old boy, finding a certain contentment in his life without actively seeking his own death. This stands apart from the original manga conclusion, where he and Shijima disappear alongside the Shinra Banshou and their immortality is lifted at last. Throughout the series, Kouichi remains a figure of contrasts: a gentle, cheerful exterior concealing centuries of wisdom, sorrow, and a quiet wish for a normal, finite existence.
