Description
Noriko Irie is the wife of Shigeki Irie and the mother of Naoki Irie and Yuuki Irie. She becomes the mother-in-law and most enthusiastic supporter of Kotoko Aihara after Kotoko and her father move into the Irie family home. Noriko has honey-brown short hair that is curled at the ends, and she is an energetic presence in the household.

Her personality is defined by warmth, cheerfulness, and a meddlesome but well-meaning nature. She is kind, sweet, and extremely accepting of Kotoko from the moment they meet, treating her like the daughter she never had. At the same time, she can be controlling and somewhat naive, often making elaborate plans that only she believes are good for her children. When it comes to protecting Kotoko's place in Naoki's life, she can become conniving and will subtly undermine any other girl she views as a rival for her son's attention. Her cheerful demeanor and overbearing tendencies serve as a comedic contrast to Naoki's cold and stoic personality.

Noriko's primary motivation is to see Naoki and Kotoko become a couple. She is the first person to suggest that they should date, and she becomes obsessed with orchestrating their romantic union. She frequently uses disguises and cameras to document their interactions and pushes them together through various schemes. Her actions consistently aim to bring happiness to her family, especially to Naoki, whom she believes needs someone like Kotoko to open up emotionally.

In the story, Noriko acts as a catalyst for the central romance. Without her persistent matchmaking and acceptance of Kotoko, the relationship between the two leads would face even greater obstacles. She provides both comedic relief through her elaborate plots and emotional support for Kotoko, who finds a maternal figure in her. Later in the series, after Naoki and Kotoko marry, Noriko delights in her role as a grandmother to their daughter, Kotomi.

Her key relationships include her husband Shigeki, with whom she shares a warm and stable partnership; her elder son Naoki, whose emotional walls she tries to break down; her younger son Yuuki, who initially mirrors Naoki's coldness but gradually warms up; and Kotoko, whom she loves unconditionally and champions throughout the series. She also maintains a friendly rapport with Kotoko's father, Shigeo.

Over the course of the series, Noriko does not undergo a dramatic transformation. Instead, she remains a constant, reliable force of positivity and support. Her role evolves from matchmaker to delighted mother-in-law and grandmother, but her core traits of enthusiasm, warmth, and gentle manipulation remain consistent. She is the emotional glue that helps hold the blended family together.

Noriko possesses no supernatural or extraordinary abilities, but she is highly skilled in social maneuvering and household management. Her talent for scheming, combined with her genuine kindness, makes her an effective if sometimes overbearing matchmaker. She is also evidently a capable homemaker, managing the Irie household with ease.
