Description
Jun Uozumi is a prominent character in the basketball narrative, serving as the third-year captain and center for the Ryonan High School basketball team. Standing at an imposing 202 centimeters (approximately 6 feet 8 inches) and weighing 90 kilograms, he is the tallest player in the Kanagawa Prefecture and the second tallest player to appear in the overall story. His physical presence is marked by his large stature, pale skin, frizzy brown hair, and a characteristically stern expression, with Sakuragi taking to calling him "Boss Monkey" due to his intimidating and powerful build.
Uozumi's journey as a basketball player is defined by perseverance and hard work. In his first year, he was a weak player who lacked stamina, to the point of regularly vomiting during practices, and was often ridiculed by his upperclassmen as someone who had nothing to offer but his height. On the verge of quitting, he was inspired by Ryonan's coach, Moichi Taoka, who shared his vision for the team's future and convinced Uozumi to continue. Through relentless training, he transformed himself into a formidable defensive presence, earning the moniker "Big Jun" for his skills under the basket. He wears jersey number 4 as the team captain, having previously worn number 9 in his second year and number 15 as a first-year.
Personality-wise, Uozumi is often serious, stern, and short-tempered, rarely lightening up around others. This lack of emotional control proves to be a significant weakness on the court, as opponents can easily bait him into making rash decisions. For instance, Hanamichi Sakuragi successfully tricks him into committing his fourth foul during a critical match, and his ejection from a game against Kainan for accruing five fouls dealt a major blow to his team's chances. Despite his fiery exterior, he has a deep respect for talent, openly admitting that his teammate Akira Sendoh is the true ace of Ryonan.
His primary motivation and defining rivalry is with Takenori Akagi, the captain and center of Shohoku. In his second year, Uozumi was completely shut down by Akagi under the basket, a humiliating experience that fueled his determination to train harder than ever to prove himself as a superior center. Though Ryonan occasionally beats Shohoku as a team, Uozumi personally never manages to surpass Akagi. This rivalry, however, is not built on animosity. It matures into a mutual respect that borders on friendship. In a key moment, when Akagi is discouraged during a national match against Sannoh, it is Uozumi who appears in his chef's uniform to restore Akagi's fighting spirit, demonstrating the profound bond between them.
His role in the story is significant as both an antagonist to Shohoku and a rival to Akagi. Following Ryonan's loss to Shohoku in the Kanagawa final four tournament, which ends his team's chance to go to the national championship, Uozumi retires from the basketball team. As his family owns a restaurant, he leaves to begin his training as a sushi chef, passing the captain's title to Sendoh. His development concludes with this mature acceptance of his own limits, acknowledging Akagi's superiority while finding his own path outside of basketball, though he remains a devoted fan who supports his former rivals from the sidelines.
