Description
Kiyota Nobunaga is a first-year student at Kainan High School, where he holds a starting position on the basketball team as a small forward, wearing jersey number 10. He stands 178 centimeters tall and weighs 65 kilograms, possessing the physical build of an athlete. As the only first-year player in Kainan's starting lineup, he is notably the youngest member among the team's regulars, a group that includes prominent upperclassmen.
In terms of personality, Kiyota is loud, boisterous, and exceptionally confident, often introducing himself as the super rookie of Kanagawa. His arrogance is a defining trait, as he constantly boasts about his own abilities and proclaims himself to be the true star rookie of the prefecture, a claim that puts him in direct rivalry with Rukawa Kaede of Shohoku. Despite his bravado, his antics frequently backfire, leading to embarrassing and comical situations that make him a source of frustration for his own team, much like his rival Sakuragi Hanamichi. For instance, before a game he tried to perform an alley-oop dunk off his own bounce pass, but the ball went into the basket before he could even grab it. Although he is quick to underestimate opponents, especially Shohoku, and engages in constant trash talk, he maintains a high level of respect for his own teammates, particularly for his captain, Maki Shinichi.
Kiyota's primary motivation stems from his intense pride and desire to prove himself as the premier rookie in Kanagawa. He regards Rukawa as a significant rival and is visibly jealous when Rukawa is named the only first-year player among the top five in the Kanagawa tournament. He also shares a fierce and comedic rivalry with Sakuragi, the two trading insults such as Red-haired monkey and Wild monkey whenever they meet. Their personalities mirror each other to such an extent that they are often seen bickering, and their respective captains, Akagi and Maki, are frequently shown disciplining them with a smack to the head for their rambunctious behavior. Despite this constant bickering, he shares a bond with Sakuragi born of their similar, hot-headed natures, and he is shown to have a deep, if unspoken, sportsmanship, as he becomes invested in Shohoku's success when they represent Kanagawa at the national tournament.
Within the story, Kiyota serves as a foil to both Rukawa and Sakuragi, representing the elite level of talent found on the historically dominant Kainan team. His role in matches is often that of a catalyst. During the Kainan versus Shohoku game, he starts strong by scoring a reverse dunk over Sakuragi. However, he struggles against Rukawa in the first half. Demonstrating significant growth and determination, he pledges during halftime to shut down Rukawa, and he returns to the court to play much tighter defense, effectively limiting Rukawa's scoring in the second half and contributing to Kainan's victory. In the match against Ryonan, with his team trailing, his frustration turns into action as he single-handedly sparks a comeback by dribbling past a defender and dunking over the much taller center, Uozumi Jun. This play highlights his ability to rise to the occasion and change the momentum of a game.
Kiyota's development is shown through his growing respect for his rivals' abilities and his own improvement as a clutch player. While he starts as purely arrogant, his experiences in intense matches force him to acknowledge the skills of others. He is one of the few players who truly challenges Rukawa defensively, and he learns to channel his energy into focused effort. His abilities are notable, primarily his extraordinary leaping power and quickness. Despite his relatively modest height of 178 centimeters, he can perform powerful dunks and block shots against much taller opponents, such as when he dunked over the 202-centimeter-tall Uozumi. He also possesses excellent ball-handling skills and blazing speed, making him a dangerous fast-break finisher and a tenacious perimeter defender, as demonstrated by his crucial block on a three-point shot by Shohoku's Mitsui Hisashi in the final moments of their game. His stamina is also exceptional, allowing him to maintain a high level of activity throughout entire matches.
